Posted - 31/08/2008 : 14:24:29 Have you ever been chased around a potato field by a man in leather trousers with a big impliment in his hand?....no, I thought not, but it happened to me yesterday Luckily being local I knew the short cuts, and managed to hide up ye olde oak tree in bonking meadow. When it was safe to come down I got back only to find I WAS the weakest link and had been disqualified due to not showing up! Flossie is harder than Anne Robinson when it comes to rules, so the Sutton Coldfield swinger won the competition by default - however I got FIRST prize for me unusually shaped King Edwards, so I'm well pleased. Today after picking the competition is who can carve the best face of a minor celebrity out of a spud. I'm confident on this one, as I did Anona Wynne at the last fete winning top prize - and I'm going to repeat it!.

Posted - 30/08/2008 : 23:08:35 OMG...
Toots has just appeared from 'out of the bushes'...

He's mumbling something to himself... sounds like.."I'm going to get my own back on Dave 'd'..."
Has he lost his mind?
oooh!... Lets hope so.
Tonight, could be much more entertaining than expected.

Posted - 30/08/2008 : 22:49:45 That Flossie was so scary "doing" her Anne Robinson. Had me quaking in my boots.which are covered in mud due to the fields being muddy.
However I digress..the final 2 in the Weakest link were myself and Dave ..I managed to win due to my knowledge of Phil Archers milkers...I knew that the best milker was called Brenda...so I won £44. 24p.
I'm all chipped out now so I'm off to bed...which is in a rather dubious looking shed

Posted - 30/08/2008 : 22:45:27 Unsurprisingly, Dave forgets to mention the 'simple castration' he attempted to perform on Toots... and I must admit that when I caught sight of the chainsaw, I began to think that I might not have much of an appetite for stomaching Belinda's extensive and impressive menu.
Anyhow, after watching Dave chasing Toots around around nigh on twenty spud fields..My appetite began to revive... and I managed some Jersey Royals and some Potato Dauphoinwhotd'ya ma call its'
Anyhow its party-time now, and we're having sack races and a potato painting competition...yawn yawn..
We are singing camp fire songs such as 'She'll be coming Round The Mountain When She Comes' and 'One Man Went To Mow'..plus other Camp Fire Favourites.
I think Toots has gone to mow, as at this moment he is nowhere to be seen.
I've told the others.. if he don't come back within the next eight hours we'll send out a search party.

Posted - 30/08/2008 : 21:48:03 The first day in the field was a great success. Weather was really quite hot today, and some 'pickers' got a little sunburnt - however there was a supply of Nivea to hand so nobody looks like a beetroot. We are halfway through the Weakest Link (it's break time), but I'm pleased to say we are still all in - Myself, Trek, Dave, Emz and the tiara woman. . . . all going strong!

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 23:10:27 Its the usual wotsit up, I see.
How can I bring sea salt for the bloomin chips?
Do I have to go to Blackpool with a filter?..
Any old way, I've been to the library and borrowed a dog eared copy of 'All Creatures Great And Small'...very interesting book and the dogs ear was a bonus.
What that James Herriott doesn't know about Blue tongues, Sheep fleas, and mad cows just aint worth knowing.
So, I'm quietly confident that I'm in line for the Gold Medal spot on The Weakest Link...
...and to finish with a song... 'The Winner takes it all'..

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 22:47:30 Trek's got the right idea here....several answers can be found listening to The Archers. Years ago 'Tom Forrest' payed a visit to our village to open the traction engine rally - it was the highlight of 1957 in these parts - women swooned If any of you are thinking of picking up tips from 'Emmerdale' - forget it!...nobody there has had their arm up a cow since 1988 ..it's all 'sex, sex, sex' they tell me now (must watch it!)

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 20:23:05 Correct Trek ...they are King Edwards...only the best grown in these ere parts, due to the manure. Please inform me if you are NOT taking the meals option. Belinda wasn't a cook at the hospital, she specialized in all forms of massage. You should see her caressing a stick of celery or a banana, and you'll soon realise what a loss he is to the NHS. If you intend to 'do' chips, please bring your own frying pan, some oil and possibly sea salt. Plates will be available, along with cutlery. Drinks in the shape of tea/coffee/milk (d.i.y courtesy of Daisy or Ermantrude in the bottom field), will be available 24 hours. Farmer Giles is having a hoe-down on Saturday evening, so something in gingham might be a good idea. During the evening there will also be a 'Weakest link' competition, with 90% of the questions 'farm related' - so swat up.

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 15:57:07 It will make a change for me to go potatoe picking in August as I'm usually to be found sprout picking in October.
I'll bring the salt and vinegar for the chips...and some eggs from the next farm ..I like eggs with my chips
I've heard it on good authority that we are pickin King Edwards...so the tiara would seem to be fitting
In order to get the bag of tatties home I shall be bringing the Reliant, so if anyone wants a lift to deepest Oxfordshire...just ask...plenty of room up front

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 13:25:17 Well I never did!...(Not very often anyway)
The Giles Family must be about the only gang of village 'ne-er do wells' that I haven't yet.. met.
Is this the same Mr' Giles, who is fondly known as 'Ruddyface' Giles in all the local hostelries, especially 'The Sour Faced Pig'?..
If so I can't wait to meet him,he sounds like a right card!..
I'm not fancying the idea of Belinda the cook, NHS food?...You must be bloomin' joking!..
No, if I'm picking spuds, I'll have chips with everything, And I'll cook them myself, if no-one minds.
Are these potatoes Maris Pipers? King Edwards?.Or the cheap variety that go like soggy rice puddin'..
You see, I need to know, as I'll dress accordingly, if they are Maris Pipers, I'll come in a kilt.. If they are King Edwards..I'll be wearing my tiara.. ..but if they are Cr..ubbish, I'll wear my overalls and scarf.
You can be sure that my medals will be displayed in a prominent position, whatever my outfit.
Let me know, Toots... I should hate to be "overdressed, underdressed.. womblin free..."
There really is a song for every occasion, aint there???

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 10:29:07 I trust everyone has recovered and those with medals are proudly wearing them? So, where shall we go next?(to coin a phrase) - well, in keeping with the outdoor theme and knowing your all at your 'peak' fitness wise how about another outdoor activity? Right?..yes?...ok, this coming weekend you are all invited down (or up in a couple of cases) to Oxfordshire for a spot of potato picking I have arranged this in conjunction with our local farmer Mr Giles, who is desperatly short-staffed at the moment due to his wife running off with Adge the combine harvester driver, and two of his daughters getting pregnant by Bill the cowpoke Mr Giles will put you up for the weekend and supply meals at Manor Farm. The meals will be provided by ex-nurse Belinda who now works for Mr Giles. She came to the farm after Mr Giles broke both his arms last January and was hospitalised for 5 weeks. Nurse Belinda was his 'right hand' for all this time With the threat of MRSA and poor pay Belinda was poached from the NHS and now almost runs the Manor farmhouse. She is a brilliant cook. Anyway...back to the spuds - there are 3 fields full of them - you will be supplied with overalls, a knife and a good supply of buckets. The foreman 'Spud Sid' will give you all the training required, and will be on hand 24/7 in case of problems. You will all be allowed a 56k sack of spuds to take home (excellent for chips etc). Some of you I know have been here before for village open days and will know where Manor Farm is situated, but for first time visitors you turn left after the railway bridge into Church Lane - the farm is next to the church on the left. see you Saturday morning then?
