I hadn't seen this thread before. It's such a good challenge.
I came to the same conclusion Pandy063 did. In my early days of listening to Dusty I could be objective because she was just another singer I was discovering. 'Dusty in Memphis' is just one of the finest albums I have heard by anybody from any music genre and its been that way from my first listen. I've often spoken about the amazing notes and pitch. It's not really the technical mastery at the end of the day that makes DIM so great, it's the profound emotional and sensual intensity of her performances and her raw intelligent truthfulness hooked up to all this prowess and control. Dusty absolutely lives these lyrics and gets every meaning out of them. This album continues to grow in importance for me - and every layer of its magnificence knocks me out.
I bought ECUD much later on the extended CD version with the great New York tracks (some of these are amongst my all time favourite Dusty tracks). It blew me away. She is so brilliant on this. She's absolutely marvellous. I'm almost having to use expletives here. To hear so much life, power, vibrancy and sheer talent almost made me cry (I probably did cry). I think this is Dusty's best UK album.
I'd have to take both to a desert island - these are my two favourite Dusty albums. Overall I'd probably have to go for 'Memphis' because of its coherency, how it can take me to another place everytime, and, its impact on me over many years. But I'd sure miss those fantastic ECUD tracks.

Funnily enough I had a listen to ECUD over the weekend and there were a few "lesser" tracks that sounded better on further listening. I loved this album from the off but I do think it runs DIM very close indeed for consistency and from the sheer youthful vocal power of Dusty's delivery as well as the catchy soul.
I now think this ought to be in the all time top ten as well (It is in my top 5 of course). |

I wanted to share that I have come to a realization that the "Dusty In Memphis" which I proudly own is absolutely one of the very best albums I have EVER listened to. I know I originally said I had to 'warm up' to DIM and didn't care for a couple of the bonus tracks. I listened to it a couple of times this week and I am amazed by Dusty's range. In fact, her voice was probably at its strongest in her career at this time. She is/was one of, if not the best female voices ever.

Reporting back - re Cleo Laine I played a few songs this week and liked them. I never saw this talented woman before now and she's 80 years young. I enjoyed her version of "Send in the Clowns".

It must be great for new fans to discover Dusty and her old records. In the past I have come across several of Dusty's old albums in the States.

I can't understand what's to dislike about Willie & Laura Mae Jones apart from the fact that it's perhaps too similar to Son Of A Preacher Man - however the lyrics tells a story and it always has been one a favourite and IMHO should have been a big hit for Dusty.

You must be quite young if you're not familiar with Cleo as she is very popular in the States and has recorded two albums at Carnegie Hall and is still touring at 80.
Cleo was more an album artist than single's but she had a few hits in the 60's with You'll Answer To Me & If We Lived On The Top Of A Mountain. She has also recorded albums bith James Galway & Dudley Moore and also a "Cleo Sings Sondheim" tv special and album.
Cleo was once asked if she is a pop singer or a jazz singer and her reply was "Neither I'm A Singer Of Songs".
She is married to the musician John Dankworth and their daughter Jacqui Dankworth has also recorded a few cd's.
Cleo Laine has an incredible range and can hit very high notes, I have seen her twice in concert and she was great.
Her recordings are very varied as she has also recorded material by Stevie Wonder & Todd Rundgren, also show songs and more obscure material.
There is a Best Of cd you could check out. |

I know Trek! Isn't that cool. I am in the processing of purchasing items throught the DSB through Paul Howes and buying old original LP's from independent record stores that carry older records of artists. I have a day trip planned with a friend to drive into Washington, DC to a record store called Melody. I am gonna scout for Dusty stuff. I also go to BEST BUY here locally and insist they stock up on Dusty CD's and DVD's. I made a trip last week and you'll be happy to hear I found they have one BBC DVD and 3 "The Very Best of Dusty Sprinfield" (20 Songs. I ended up purchasing the BBC DVD for a gift... paying several dollars more... but she's worth it. They will have to order more...

I agree with you Sara I prefer Dusty In Memphis to ECUD.Every song on that album is superb.Dustys voice takes precedence over the backing musicians who themselves are playing beautifully.

I agree some of the bonus tracks on 'DIM' aren't so great, but the whole original album is amazing! It didn't have to grow on me cos I loved it immediately... 'It Begin's Again', 'Living without Your Love', and 'Reputation', apart from a few songs, did take a while to grow on me though I have to admit.

I do not own ECUD, but have heard all the songs... I did purchase DIM a few weeks ago and I DID have to "warm up" to the different sound... it's just different than her old stuff (the GREAT stuff). I have to agree with Marty about those songs she mentions - I find myself skipping them so to speak. I love the first 11 tracks... Well my 2 cents worth...

Doesn't the group "Swing Out Sister" sing 'Am I The Same Girl'? I heard that song in the 90's on cassette. Loved it and Swing Out Sister. I need to hear Dusty's version. I am so a newbie. I have only been into Dusty (discovered her) since Septemeber when I was convalescing on the sofa with my broken ankle from sliding in to 2nd in softball. I bought a laptop and looked at You Tube and learned new things about Dusty after taking the time to read her bio after the "Look of Love" song and vid. Then one thing led to another - I was hooked. Funny - I always heard of "Wishin & Hopin", IJDKWTDWMS, IOWTBWY, YDHTSYLM, etc, but did not know 'who' sang or what she looked like or where she was from.

If you listen to the high note Dusty hits on that particular song you will understand the comparison to Cleo Laine's register. Nobody is saying we WANT Dusty to sound like Cleo, but it only proves what a great song stylist Dusty was being able to sing in so many different styles.
Memphis appears to have taken on a kind of cult following "Oh You Have To Listen To Memphis" kind of thing and it over-shadows Dusty's others work to the point that hardly any of her other albums are mentioned which is a great shame. She made many wonderful recordings before Memphis and it would be great if they were given the same accolades.

I am new to Dusty so am not influenced by any previous cults as they were unknown to me although I had read reviews on itunes/Amazon when choosing which CD's to buy. I have listened to all her 60's albums pretty close together and I also found DIM takes longer to fully appreciate. On first hearing I wondered what the fuss was about (ECUD is certainly more commercial and no surprise it sold more at the time) but it just grew and grew on me like Carole says).
You mention Cleo but on Am I The Same Girl (I think it's that track), I think she sounds like Michael Jackson

Considering Cleo was on the go long before Dusty I find that a very strange statement, but you can't hold Cleo responsible for the comments of an a*****e dj! |
