I am trying to think of the name of an American actress from around 20 or more years ago.

She was never a huge star and I think I only ever saw her in 2-3 movies but you remembered her performance.

The one that sticks in my mind is one where she was driven home by a man friend, seconds later her doorbell rang and she thought he had forgotten something and opened the door - to the murderer!!!!!!!

For some reason I think she maybe made a movie with John Wayne.

Her appearance was kind of Spanish/Indian looking and she wore her hair back off her face, kind of a motherly looking with a kind face and she always played the role of a nice person.

I've done a google search and came up with nothing, it's now starting to bug me and I HAVE to know for my own peace of mind!!!!!!

Well Colleen Dewhurst certainly had a distinctive voice - she can be heard as the demon in The Exorcist III! - but I don't think there was anything Canadian about it. She was born in Montreal - apparently to an English speaking family - but was relocated to Boston at age 13 & attended high school & college in the Milwaukee area before studying drama in New York City where she lived with her first husband for at least 13 years (her second husband was George C Scott - the couple married & divorced twice). Colleen's career burgeoned as she matured: she had her first major Broadway role at age 36 & was 50 when she was proclaimed a Broadway star. Altho she was a career stage actress Colleen amassed a large number of TV & movie credits. Her film debut was in The Nun's Story in 1959 & she did indeed appear in the John Wayne vehicles The Cowboys & McQ: she also played Diane Keaton's mother in Annie Hall. After retiring from the stage in 1988 following her 64th birthday Colleen scored her signature television roles in the US playing Murphy Brown's mother & in Canada playing Maritime icon Marilla Cuthbert in The Road to Avonlea. Sadly she died of cervical cancer in 1991.

Are you serious aobut your comment Irish/English/Canadian? How do you answer, none of the above!

Marty

Yes I'm quite serious. I answer neither I am Scottish, and that's a real ice breaker as they love us due to Sean Connery, sometimes they get it right. I remember in a store in Seattle the clerk asked me what part of Scotland I was from, it turned out he was a big Sean fan. He was delighted when he knew I was from the same city as 007 !!!!!

I didn't know that but she sounded American as Canadians do, I suppose you'll detect the difference in their accents?
I am sometimes asked whilst in the States if I am A. Irish, B. English or C. Canadian.
