Posted - 18/05/2008 : 14:38:51 I thought some of ya might be interested to see Shirley Maclaine singing Where Am I Going/ from 'Sweet Charity.'
In fact, I think Dusty would have made an excellent Sweet Charity.

Posted - 04/08/2008 : 07:06:08 Hi there Memphis,
Sorry the video depressed you. I was sad to learn that she is no longer with us. I don't remember hearing a thing about it before. After your comment I decided to Google her. I don't recall her in "Change of Habit" either. Guess we both were looking at Elvis, LOL! I also just read that her career went downhill because of heroine :(

Posted - 04/08/2008 : 01:49:52 Hi Marty
Earlier tonight I looked her up on Wikapaedia and found out much the same plus she'd had some bad luck. I saw her in Elvis''Change of Habit' movie but can't remember her now probably because I was looking at Elvis. I'm going to buy some of her CDs and say hello even though she's gone. Thanks again for the video even though it's depressed me!

Posted - 04/08/2008 : 00:34:55 Welcome Memphis. Barbara McNair grew up in Chicago and was popular back in the 60's/70's. Yet,IMO, extremely unrated. She appeared in all the top night clubs throughout the country such as The Plaza Hotel/Persian Room (so did Dusty), Coconut Grove in Los Angeles, and the top hotels in Vegas. She also appeared in movies such as They Call Me Mr. Tibbs and In the Heat of the Night with Sidney Portier. She had her own varieity show in the late 60's and early 70's and also appeared in several Broadway shows. She did record on the Motown Record label for awhile as well.

Posted - 03/08/2008 : 22:56:14 Thanks Marty. She's brilliant and so lovely. I only know Barbara McNair from her Motown hit 'Baby A Go Go' which I love. But clearly, from this video, she was so much more than that. How comes there's so much talent that we just don't know about it until it's over... Oh maaan.....
Brian might have more to tell us about this fabulous woman...

Posted - 03/08/2008 : 19:56:07 I accidently stumbled into this. It's a u-tube clip of Barbara McNair singing a medley from Sweet Charity on the Dean Martin Show. I think she was absolutely brilliant and puts a huge amount of feeling into this performance. I also just discovered that we lost her last September. I was rather shocked to hear this.
I hope everyone enjoys this clip as much as I did.

Posted - 23/05/2008 : 17:06:30 Hi Memphis,
I saw the first two Talk of the Town shows, both were amazing. Sweet Charity hadn't got to London then, neither had Cabaret, but she also did a brilliant version of "Don't Tell Mama" in the same show.

Posted - 23/05/2008 : 01:02:41 Hey Jonathan
Thanks. I might have known. Sounds like she saw herself in Charity - looking for something better. I'm glad it's one of my favourite musicals too. Did you see that Talk of the Town show - lucky you if you did.

Posted - 23/05/2008 : 00:22:22 Dusty did sing "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This" at her first Talk of the Town season, she used it as a link between her Springfield days and her solo career, so she obviously did like the song, Memphis!

Posted - 22/05/2008 : 23:00:36 Dusty also sang 'If They Could See Me Now' on one of her BBC shows - it's on the recent Universal DVD. I guess she really liked this musical. So do I. It's one of my favourite soundtracks (my Mum took me to see the film when I was little); Dusty saw the Broadway show. I bet Dusty also liked the song ' There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This' and of course the camp 'Big Spender' which has great Bob Fosse choreography but Dusty (thoughtful as ever) picked the introspective 'Where Am I Going' to record. She would have made a great red headed Charity. I think 'I'm a Brass Band' also suits her. Lyrics:
" Charity: Someone loves me! Someone loves me! Someone loves me, My heart is beating so fast. All kinds of music is pouring out of me, Somebody loves me at last! Now... I'm a brass band, I'm a harpsichord; I'm a clarinet! I'm the Philadelphia Orchestra, I'm the Modern Jazz Quartet! I'm the band from Macy's Big Parade. A wild Count Basie blast! I'm the bells from Saint Peter's in Rome I'm tissue paper on a comb... And all kinds of music Is pouring out of me 'cause... Somebody loves me...at last! Chorus: She's a brass band, She's a harpsichord, She's a clarinet! Charity: That's me! Chorus: She's the Philadelphia Orchestra, She's the Modern Jazz Quartet! She's a brass band, She's a harpsichord, She's a clarinet! She's the Philadelphia Orchestra, She's the Modern Jazz Quartet! She's the band from Macy's Big Parade A wild Count Basie blast! She's the bells from Saint Peter's in Rome She's tissue paper on a comb... Charity: Somebody loves me...at last!"
Always, Dusty, we always will. And she's also a saxophone (shoulda been the last line!)

Posted - 21/05/2008 : 20:22:45 "Where Am I Going" is also one of my favourite Dusty LP's!
Have to admit that "Where Am I Going" was not initially one of my favourite songs from the album, but it's grown on me over the years and Dusty's vocal is superb - she really gives her all to dliver the big finish.
My computer-speakers are broken...so I can't hear Shirley Maclaine..can't imagaine that it's better than Dusty though.

Here is the history of Sweet Charity.
Marty PS. The "Where Am I Going" album I think is among Dusty's best. IMO better than DIM. |

Posted - 18/05/2008 : 20:23:08 I happen to think the title track to WAIG is the weakest song on the album.............sorry but I just don't think much of the song (not a Dusty Vocal issue) and the fact it is the final track, rather spoils what is otherwise an excellent album. |

Posted - 18/05/2008 : 18:53:02 Thanks so much for the link Carole. I saw Sweet Charity on Broadway MANY years ago and loved it. After seeing the play, I thought the movie was a bit disappointing, but often feel that way after seeing something live. Helen Gallager played Sweet Charity at the time, who is no longer with us.
As for Dusty playing Sweet Charity, I know I have said it many times, I really do think the part was MADE FOR DUSTY!!! She might have to had work a bit on her New York accent, but I don't question for a minute that she could not have done it. If I was a casting director, I certainly would have picked her for the part!
