This thread is going way off topic from You Can Have Him to A Song For You so let's get back on track.

Dusty's version was great considering she did it LIVE.

Dionne's version in my opinion was one of the best soul records she ever made and was such a departure from her usual ballad style. I bought the original single which had several false endings only for the drums to come back and start it all over again, many years later I was very disappointed that the cd version was edited and nowhere near as long as the single.

However Miss Warwick hates this record, it was recorded in the UK and she complained that the could not get the sound she wanted - so why not do it again in an American studio I wonder? Anyway I think it's one of Dionne's best, I loved it when she got Soulful, infact she had an album called just that and it's great.

Yes, indeed. The drum sound is so loud it reminds me of The Muppets when they did 'Fever' with Rita Moreno! Do you remember this?

The Drums have a 'Fever' flavour don't ya think?

Kind of understated.

Carole,

You did say serious competition and it is. Dionne's version is of course a perfect studio recording. Dionne is great on this. The musical backing including the backing vocals are so good. It was the drums that made me do it!

Thanks, this is the first time I've heard Dionne's version, it's very different to Dusty's. I love it! I love both of them. But I love Dusty's more too

Very interesting all this..thanks everyone for the good comments.

I must admit that I'd never heard of Cake til now!

I also agree with Brian that Dionne did the best version of this song, but obviously Dusty's version is better than Cake in my opinion.

You make an interesting comment Mephis about Dusty not selling in the 68-69 period..to quote you....

You can see how the youth market would not be buying Dusty records by 1968-1969; Dusty just wasn't hip enough or young enough anymore. Nowadays with baby boomers staying eternal teen-agers and still buying music, she would have sold and sold...

I agree with you.

I can't find out exactly how she died but she married Chris Wood (of Traffic) in 1969 and he died three years after her in 1983, aged 39. His wikipedia page refers to battling drugs and alcohol in the late 70's so possibly Jeanette's ridiculously early death was related to something similar.

I found this very touching tribute to Jeanette from one of the other cake members, Chelsea Lee (formerly known as Eleanor Barooshian), posted in a forum on 26th Septemeber 2007

JEANETTE JACOBS-WOOD-THE 'REAL' JENNIE FROM THE BLOCK

IF YOU KNEW JEANETTE'S LIFE STORY AS I DO,YOU WOULD REALIZE THAT SHE WAS AN ABUSED,UNWANTED CHILD OF MIXED RACE,SPOKE FLUENT GREEK AND PROFESSED TO BE THE ILLEGITMATE DAUGHTER OF KING FAROUK.IT IS ALSO TAKEN FOR GRANTED THAT SHE WAS 'THE JEWESS' OF 'THE CAKE'-WRONG,I AM. SHE HAD BEAUTIFUL DREAMS OF RAINBOWS ,MAGIC AND KINGS.SHE WAS WITH A KING FOR A LONG TIME-JIMI HENDRIX.SHE ACTUALLY DID COME FROM THE 'BLOCK' AND TOOK THE SEEDINESS OUT OF IT AND MADE IT A DREAM CALLED 'RAINBOW WOOD'.I DON'T THINK SHE AND I WOULD EVER HAVE IMAGINED THAT SHE WOULD MARRY A 'WOOD'!! THIS WAS A GIRL,WHO DID ACCOMPLISH A DREAM AND LET ME ADD,TO EVERYONE THAT WATCH 'THE CAKE' VIDEOS AND COMMENT ON HER JUST STANDING THERE-THIS GIRL ,AT 19 YEARS OLD,SANG AT THE ALBERT HALL TO A SOLD OUT AUDIENCE IN 1969.THE DAY YOU DO THAT IS THE DAY YOU DISRESPECT HER MEMORY-NOT BEFORE. SHE WAS A TRUE BEAUTY INSIDE AND OUT AND EVERY MAN AND WOMAN WHO MET HER,FELL IN LOVE WITH HER INSTANTLY AND FOREVER,AS I DID.IT HAS BEEN MY HONOUR AND FORTUNE TO HAVE GROWN-UP,WRITTEN SONGS,PERFORMED,LIVED,LOVED,LAUGHED,LIED,SIGHED,CRIED AND NEARLY DIED WITH MY BEST FRIEND AND WHO,WITH HER PASSING,DID INDEED-TAKE A PART OF MY SOUL WITH HER--THE 'REAL' JENNIE FROM THE BLOCK.

MISS JEANETTE JACOBS-WOOD-HAPPY BIRTHDAY -YOU ARE NOW INFAMOUS WITH THE CAKE RE-RELEASE TO CD,YOUR MUSIC WILL LIVE FOREVER AS YOU WILL IN MY HEART AND MANY,MANY OTHERS.YOU ARE SORELY MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN FOR A MOMENT-HOW COULD I EVER FORGET YOU-I LOVE YOU,JENNIE FROM THE BLOCK-YOU COW MISS CHELSEA LEE XXX

I think she'd like being "the green one"

Found this on a blog

The grooviest chicks on YouTube. The Cake were a truly fab sixties' three-piece girl group, comprising Chelsea, Barbara and Jeanette. They looked like they had an expense account at Biba, and sang like angels. The late Jeanette Jacobs Woods is the one who stands stock still throughout this teared-stained melodrama of a song. What a gal!

Just jumped on & read this thread. Sara you are funny - referring to one of members of Cake as "the Green One" sorta sounds like a Martian...LOL... she's dressed in green I get it. I agree there is some gimmick with her - standing there looking forlorn and maybe 'pissed'. Is she pissed cause she's in this group and has little talent in this song? Listen to me I sound critical... I probably could NOT do much better at singing/acting, although you can ask friends and family I can hang w/ the best as a Drama Queen. Sorry got off subject. Anyways - I never heard of them and they were fine for the times I guess. Of course I loved watching & listening to Ms. Dusty. What a complete DOLL. She is such a good lookin' woman - I bet she was always fighting them off! What a delight to the world. I must say I love watching Dusty in those B&W vids. What a complete Class Act !! Muwaah! xxx (i am in a good mood) Happy 4th of July my fellow Americans. This Day celebrates/commenmorates our Independence from Britain. Glad were not speaking FRENCH!
