Posted - 26/08/2008 : 23:21:32 It was the same for all of us Marty, I'm sure. I'm just so very glad Dusty was with us for as long she was and knew she was totally loved and appreciated by us all at the end.
Last week I saw the last 15 minutes of what looked like a great documentary on the music that came out of Detroit. I missed the Motown years and only saw Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper. What made my eyes pop out wasn't the theatrics of Iggy and Alice, it was the state of Detroit today, The car industry (and Motown) has re-located and ripped the heart out of a great city. It looked like a dead beat ghost town. I was really shocked.

Posted - 26/08/2008 : 21:29:58 Just had to had my two cents here. As everyone knows, I am a huge American fan of Dusty's and I have been a fan ever since I Only Want To Be With You was released stateside. However, Dusty went silent for me for more than 20 years. The Grande Finale and Anne Murray's TV special was pretty much the last I heard from her. Yes, I heard was living in California for a while, but had no idea how long. I know I've mentioned before that whenever I heard anyone with a British accent, I immediately went up to them asking if they can tell me anythihng about Dusty Springfield Their response was basically--Oh she still is around I finally saw her on TV one morning talking about the fact she has breat cancer. She was very positive and looked great. I had no idea that Dusty was involved with any drugs at the time. Although I heard stories that she did have a bit of a drinking problem. Probably about a year after her death, I started using the Internet, reading all the misforunate stories about Dusty and was rather shocked and certainly upset by it all. On the brighter side, I was making UK and International friends that sent me many new tracks that I never heard before. BTW, I did purchase AFL shortly before we lost her as I spotted it at Sam Goode. My point is that the "dark" for a lack of a better word, were unknown to me while they were happening. Being such a big fan for so many years, if they were unknown to me, I am sure they must have been unknown to nearly all Americans, unless they had personal contact with Dusty.

As for Amy - she needs a good kick up the what's it............... She really is a mess in every sense of the word, she must get her act together or she's going to lose everything. To be honest I no longer have any time for her.
Very sadly thats exactly what a lot of people thought about Dusty in the 70's in particular, you know Karl .
Janie x54
Unless you know something I don't Janie I am unaware of any embarassment Dusty caused. As far as I am concerned she always behaved like a lady.
We're talking at cross purposes here Karl - my fault for going too far away from the subject of the thread, I fear . I responded to your comment which didn't mention anything about embarrassment caused by anybody . I'm simply saying that for many people, myself included, they felt that what happened when Dusty went to the States (and we don't need to reiterate those things here) suggested that she also needed a swift kick up the proverbial, that she was also throwing her life and talent away. Most people I knew around the time, who were nothing to do with showbusiness btw, were fully aware of Dusty's 'troubles' so its not as if the world was ignorant of a lot of what went on........Dusty and Amy though have to be put in their historical context...how interesting it would have been if they had lived in the same era .
Sorry Carole but this is a bit interesting as well....we'll maybe have to start up another thread for Dusty and Amy
I was much younger then and I admit very judgemental in certain circumstances, and that was reflected in my feelings. Life has thrown its wobblies at me as the years have gone by and I am now a whole lot more understanding of the position that people find themselves in/land themselves in.....the expression that MICBO referred to about walking in others shoes for a mile or two sums it up for me. Another one for me is 'there but for the grace of god' .

How many MP's know anything at all about the Constituency they represent?
Very few, I'd guess.

Posted - 24/08/2008 : 02:06:10 Thanks Memphis. I recently read somewhere, think it was from an on line Henley newspaper, that Boris had NO IDEA about Dusty's stone in Henley

Posted - 24/08/2008 : 01:34:35 You can find lots of information on Boris here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Johnson
Boris Johnson is known here more as a buffoon more than a responsible poltician. He is a Conservative (elected as Henley's MP - so there's a Dusty connection) and, overall, London has been a Labour domain. I think his election is another sign that people are tired of Labour and want a change almost for the sake of change.
Boris's predecessor, Ken Livingstone - who was known as Red Ken in his earlier days- brought in the controversial congestion charge which means that most drivers (not the eco friendly ones) have to pay to go through inner London at peak time and so London is just a little less congested - far fewer lorries add to the traffic jams. He also did a deal with Venezuela for cheap fuel.
Boris was seen as a refreshing change despite his buffoonery. Basically, we (I live in London) didn't have enough decent candidates to choose from so Boris won by default. Boris may shape up - we'll have to see. He's cancelled the Venezuela deal which means we'll probably have to pay even higher public transport charges. But the Conservative Party will be pressuring him to do a good popular job ahead of the national election which will come in due course.

Posted - 24/08/2008 : 01:10:43 Well, that's fair enough. Can't we just close the subject of Amy down for a while more and stop judging unless it's about her recorded music. But first....
Jane must have missed the dedicated Amy thread that was created because of the disruptive diversions here. I regret that I was the one that mentioned Amy in the first place. And Emma, you're offering yet another judgement. I would have hoped that people in Dusty houses would be more compassionate and not throw judgemental stones. I've thrown in a few myself. Now I just wish Amy well. I have no idea what she's dealing with but I would assume, and it is an assumption, that it's deep pain that none of us here can understand. Plus huge pressure to perform while she's bankable - she's in the music industry and it isn't called an industry for nothing. That might be where the drugs come in just like they did with Dusty and many others. Some people can't just change. They need lots of support and it takes time.

Posted - 23/08/2008 : 23:13:41 The reason I can't stand Amy is not because of her lifestyle, but the fact that she's totally over-rated and sounds like a foghorn.

Posted - 23/08/2008 : 18:43:12 I'm not sure that people are being judgemental Jane , and I understand what you say about whether individuals learn from their mistakes . I just think (and please correct me if I'm wrong somebody ) that it's really because Amy had seemingly in the past not made any committment or effort to deal with, or change the things that were so obviously messing up her life i.e. drugs- which I think is what may infuriate people, as some may feel as though she was just throwing her life away with the lifestyle she had.
Fair enough though Jane, I agree with you that none of us I'm sure live the perfect life- I for one definitely haven't so far, although I wish sometimes

Posted - 23/07/2008 : 19:56:14 Apologies to Carole again for being off topic maybe we need to start another national thread, but I think it's great the way we all can share an open conversation.
I just read that Amy is pregnant with twins. I sure hope not, we don't need anymore drug addicted children born into this world. I worked in the child abuse scene for ten years and will just say it's an awful thing to happen and see.
