As I accidently appear to have sabotaged t'other thread- sorry Carole!   , I thought I'd post my poem here instead.
I worked on it last night, but it is still not quite finished- I think it may be quite long!   . It's a working progress, so I'll add it bit by bit.
Dusty Springfield OBE
Mary started as a convent girl
who cherished her music so.
Then little by little, bit by bit,
became the glamorous host of ‘Ready Steady Go!’
Her musical dreams had started small,
despite the country (at the time) being in the middle of a war.
Listening to the sounds of singers like Peggy Lee,
Mary soon began to think, ‘Oh I wish that was me’.
So then her transformation began
a youthful teenager who had a plan.
And after a bit of wishin’ and hopin’,
Mary joined the Lana Sisters, and changed her name to ‘Shan’.
The trio had success within both music and TV,
and a few years soon floated by.
Having grown both in confidence and experience,
‘Shan’ felt it was now time to say goodbye.
So ‘Shan’ was Mary again once more,
then who should come a knockin’ at her door?
Her brother Dion and his friend Tim,
were starting a new group, and wanted Mary to join in.
As a result, The Springfields did form,
and went on to capture the world by storm.
With ‘Island Of Dreams’, ‘Say I Won’t Be There’,
the siblings decided to change their names, and Mary even dyed her hair!
Dion became Tom, Mary became Dusty,
and continued to sing songs that sounded kinda folksy.
But sadly The Springfields soon did part,
allowing Dusty to go solo- a brand new start.
Along came the dresses, iconic make-up and hairdo,
Dusty enjoyed her first chart spot with 'I Only Want To Be With You'.
Her voice was now exposed for everyone to hear,
and the catalyst that sparked her spectacular career.
From soulful ballads, motown, jazz and swing,
there was nothing in the world that this lady couldn't sing.
Dusty's successful reputation took her far and wide,
her name entwined with more hit songs- and even the advert promoting Mother's Pride!
A group called ‘The Echoes’ became Dusty’s backup band,
supporting her as she went on tour, accompanying her as she sang.
From Australia to South Africa, and despite the summer heat,
on stage Dusty performed (amongst others) her favourite song, ‘Dancing In The Street’.
Eventually being seduced by her ‘American dream’,
Dusty had (or so it seemed) disappeared from the music scene.
Then suddenly ‘Dusty In Memphis’ was launched into the world,
possibly the greatest of her albums ever to be heard.
Singing songs like, ‘Breakfast In Bed’ to ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’,
Dusty had (by now) turned practically everyone into a fan!
With her eclectic style in music she also did bring,
songs written by duos Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Gerry Goffin and Carole King.
However Dusty soon began to wonder, ‘how can I be sure?’
her thoughts of returning home to England, growing more and more.
In the land of make believe, nothing felt the same,
so one day Dusty made her choice- ‘I’m coming home again’.
Now back in the UK, what’s it gonna be?
surely this would not be the last we would hear of Dusty?
An opportunity then arose that she decided not to miss,
bouncing back into the charts with the Pet Shop Boys, and ‘What Have I Done To Deserve This?'
So quiet please, there's a lady on stage,
showing that quality singing is not lost with time and age.
Like a summer rose, she needed the sun and the rain,
finally it looked as though everything was coming up Dusty again...
Until that unforgettable day, in 1999,
when the curtain of Dusty's life, closed for the final time.
The church and streets of Henley were filled with friends, fans and peers,
all uniting to celebrate her life music and achievements, that spanned those remarkable 59 years.
But days have come and gone since Dusty was here,
having left just enough love to hold in our hands; memories that trigger a smile or a tear.
Now immortalised in the Hall Of Fame where forever she will be,
remembered as a lady with so much heart and soul- that was Dusty Springfield OBE.

......I didn't expect you all to take to reading it as you have . I was beginning to think that you may all have thought that I went a bit far- I do. No idea what made me carry on, the verses for a while just flowed together- as though someone was speaking them to me. The last three were more difficult, as I wanted to tell the truth, but at the same time remain sensitive to Dusty's memory if you know what I mean.
It has honestly been a real surprise reading all your postings over the last week or so, and for each of you to be incredibly complimentary about it is lovely- I'm not someone who takes compliments easily when received, for some reason although I know they're positive, it makes me feel uncomfortable sometimes.
However, I am very happy that you all like it. At the end of the day I wrote it in memory of the lady that has brought us together here........Dusty .

I agree with Carole and Janie. This shouldn't be lost. I'm intrigued to hear about 'the new fan section'. Sounds like a good place for Emma's poem or maybe even a new poetry section.

After all Emma's hard work,
I think this poem definitely deserves pride of place somewhere.
It should be displayed in a proper fashion and not be allowed to get lost on the boards.

To tell the Dusty Story from the fifties to the nineties in verse, is nothing short of FAB!

Really? Of course you may use it if you feel it i good enough- It may take up a few pages though as you can see, it's still not finished- I've got to try and wrap it up in the next two verses at least, plus I need to think of a suitable title for it!

I've nearly finished it now- honest! I've just added some more verses from where I left off t'other day.
I'm slowing down now- it's taking a wee bit longer to get the right sound. However I do feel that it looks more like an extract from a book than a poem....never mind!
