on another thread (hermanns Hermits) Frans mention Goldie and the Gingerbreads-- i have never heard of them-- i done a utube search and came up with this!!!!

Love the video, very interesting, I don't remember Goldie and the Gingerbreads at all, but I noted that New York was mentioned. I wish there was a way to slow it down to take in all the pictures.
Noted that this group sings "Lord knows is no sin" while Dusty sings is no sin. Made me think that her Catholic upbringing is why the lyric was changed (thou shall not take the Lord's name in vain).

 The Byrds sing about electric trains & trees to climb rather than colouring books & Christmas bells to chime: likely it was felt these lyrics rang more true as boyhood - rather than girlhood - memories. In all likelihood Gerry Goffin himself composed both sets of lyrics to cover the eventuality of a male or female singing the song. |

Well, it just shows how competitive Dusty was. She was tough and that hit was gonna be hers. It was a Dusty masterpiece too - a work of devotion. She must have been very proud and possessive about it. Interesting insight. Thanks Sweetbaby. I might get Genya's book.

Genya Revan was a New Yorker (actually a child war refugee from Poland) who was one of several "Yankettes" to seek fame & fortune in swingin' 60s London where her gig with the Gingerbreads brought her cult stardom rather than mainstream success - a pattern repeated in the 70s in the US with Genya's recordings fronting Ten Wheel Drive & then as a solo artist. Genya's last release of new material was in 1979 but she's continued to perform: on July 27 2003 - Janis Joplin's 60th birthday - Genya was one of a number of vocalistes who performed with Janis' band members in a Janis tribute held in New York's Central Park: Genya sang Stay With Me. Since 2006 Genya's hosted a monthly show on Steven Van Zandt's Underground Garage radio channel on Sirius Satellite Radio: her Goin' Back producer Andrew Loog Oldham hosts a show on the same channel.
In her bio Lollipop Lounge, Genya relates that her Goin' Back single failed because Carole King voiced a protest when she learned that Genya had deviated from the original lyrics - & acccording to Genya these lyric changes (which Genya contends were insignificant) were brought to Carole's attention by Dusty who was disappointed that Genya had cut the song first. Altho Genya's version doesn't put Dusty in the most flattering light Genya doesn't express any rancor toward Dusty - altho Dusty's barely mentioned in the book Genya emphasizes that the two women were good friends. |

I know I've got 'Walking in Different Circles' by the group on the 'One Kiss Leads To Another : Girl Group Sounds' box-set - cos it's on my PC. I'm sure I have another track somewhere but their stuff is very rare.

This is a such a cool group but a little bit mysterious to me so it's good to see the info on the video. I heard about them in 'Sounds' or 'NME' back in the late 70s. I've got a solo album by Genya Raven (Goldie). She's a cool rocker. I can just imagine her hanging out with Dusty.
This was the address that Dusty said was 'like our little Brill Building'. It's where Ahmet Ertegun popped by see Goldie, heard Dusty's new recording of 'Some of Your Lovin' and offered Dusty a contract if she ever wanted one. Cool links or what?

Furthermore! - 'Goldie' is Genya Raven who joined the group Ten Wheel Drive who were quite successful. She (I'm told!) moved to Australia where she became a fairly big star (I'm relying on our Australian members to confirm)
Back again to Goldie & The Gingerbreads - formed 1962 - disbanded 1967. They were 'discovered' by The Rolling Stones - in fact more by Keith Richards - if you believe the press release! These 'discoveries' were not always correct (Diana Ross 'discovered' the Jackson 5 for example - it WAS Gladys Knight!)...but it usually help careers if a big name was tagged on at the time.
The group consisted of Genya,Ginger Bianco,Margo Lewis and Carole MacDonald (who passed away in March 2007). There is currently NO recorded material available by the group, although I'm sure 'Can't you hear my heartbeat' is on a compilation featuring other girl groups.

This is interesting. Back in 1965 this was the 'follow-up' to Goldie & The Gingerbreads hit 'Can't you hear my heartbeat'. It was issued on Andrew Loog Oldham's record label Immediate - possibly a week before Dusty's version was released, but mysteriously was 'withdrawn ' after a couple of weeks! I'm sure Andrew thought it didn't stand a chance against Dusty's version! Very wise - Dusty was HOT at this time. That was not the end of the story however, for a few months later it was issued AGAIN by Immediate but this time by 'Goldie' - with no 'Gingerbreads'! Of course it wasn't a hit.

maybe we should have a Dusty connections section-that nearly rhymed then,, make for interesting reading and Dusty trivia
