Nearly twelve years after her passing an album of twelve previously unissued tracks by Eva Cassidy was released August 26. Entitled Somewhere the disc features folk music (ie. My Love Is Like A Red Rose), classic country songs including Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors, two Aretha Franklin remakes: Won't Be Long & Chain of Fools, & reportedly the first recordings of songs Eva co-wrote: the title cut & Early One Morning. Samples are available at http://www.blixstreet.com/eva.html.

The UK apparently has a serious enough case of "Eva feva" to occasion a revival of Over the Rainbow the staged bio which has toured five times previously from 2004 without blipping the critical radar: no doubt the promo material is sincere in describing the play as award-winning & approved by the Cassidy family. Faye Tozer of Steps who played Eva [as pictured] last year again headlines the tour which plays London at the Greenwich Theatre October 30 & 31 with two performances November 1. I don't want to bog down the board with all seven weeks of tour dates but if any interested parties would like to know somewhere Over the Rainbow (tee hee) is playing near you please don't hesitate to ask.

Somewhere has debuted at no#4 UK AND the attendant promo has returned Songbird to the charts - it's now at no#51.

Songbird is the album I heard years ago whilst in a small shop in Maleny. I'll always remember that moment when everything stopped. I see myself talking to the shopkeeper WHO IS THE SINGER?, the place bulging with hippy clothing and Eva's voice filling the air with it's sweetness and emotion. Waly Waly I love.

Eva's career ascendancy actually began in 2000 - four years after her death - when Terry Wogan began airing cuts from her two year old Songbird album. Eva's father has stated that there are enough unreleased tracks for at least one more Eva Cassidy album. And a biopic of Eva is in development - her parents have indicated Kirsten Dunst & Emily Watson as suitable candidates to play Eva.

I've been hearing about this, too.
...and I heard Eva's version of 'Won't Be Long' on the radio the other day.

I didn't know who was singing, but knew it wasn't Dusty..I was surprised to learn that it was Eva Cassidy.

For Me, Eva's version of 'Fields Of Gold' is one of the saddest things I ever heard(In a good way!)..

She was a top notch natural singing talent.

I was just going to write about this!
This release contains previously 'unreleased' material, but that's not to say it's second-rate material. Eva had a real 'knack' in picking songs that really suited her (read almost ANYTHING). She could sing folk, blues, country, rhythm & blues and standards with ease. The voice is so pure and quite outstanding - Eva had a 'sound' all of her own. Some tracks have been 'finished' - i.e backing tracks/vocals have been added by her musicians who have done a superb job - they knew how Eva would have done it.
Tracks that stand out on the first few plays are 'Ain't doin' too bad' (blues at it's best), Aretha's 'Chain of fools' and 'Won't be long'* (*Yes - Dusty's 'Won't be long' also!). Both recordings are top-notch. Patsy Cline's 'Walkin' after midnight' proves Eva could sing country with ease & Gershwin's 'Summertime' is simply lovely!
When the music world lost Eva Cassidy it lost a true gem of a star who will go down in history as one of the GREATEST female singers of all time. Her legacy will live on.
Buy this album - it's *****
