Posted - 27/08/2008 : 20:02:50 We haven't had one of these for a while , and I'm sorry if we've already done this one .
So, you get to choose just one. Which would you choose? and (if you have one ) a reason why?
For me (and it's hard 'cos I really like 'em both ) I think that In Private may just have the edge.

Posted - 23/12/2008 : 03:03:30 Hello all. Well I really got into the Reputation CD over the Summer. I like both songs by Dusty for different reasons. They are different yet similar. What can I say. I enjoy both and if pinned to a wall let me choose ... awh can't do it.

Posted - 23/12/2008 : 02:37:50 The "in private" video I thought was well funny, its as if Dusty had the last laugh! she must have been in her element performing with or flaunting several models/dancers/performers of the same sex along side her in the video, was there a message attached to this?

Agreed, Jan, I didn't care for the video. I wanted to see our girl, not a bunch of tarts that can't act...

Posted - 29/08/2008 : 02:36:01 There's a very pragmatic side to many of Dusty's song choices and I agree many aren't personal. But many song choices were because there was a true connection - sometimes this is obvious and sometimes it's a more profound under-current. All that emotion wasn't artifical.
As for the these two, I think these songs were the Pet Shop Boys idea of Dusty and Dusty did a good professional job - but she's not living those lyrics. I'd go for 'In Private' but 'Reputation' is good too. But 'Arrested By You' is the truest Dusty song. I can tell by the last 30 seconds.

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 23:24:40 I prefer the lyrics to 'Reputation', but 'In Private' is just so catchy! I'm surprised it didn't chart higher. Agree the video sucks

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 23:17:28 I can't help but think of the dopey video of "In Private" when I hear that song - the camera whizzing by those silly young women hamming it up 'fake talking' on telephones and WAY too little of Dusty in it.
So, 'Reputation' it is for me.

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 23:09:24 I'll say In Private but for me I am really a 60's Dusty fan and am somewhat indifferent even with her Pet Shop Boys rally.
Sorry

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 22:57:30 Thats the difference.. Sharleen Spiteri has openly said that the songs on her album relate to her recent experiences.
Dusty, as Linda says, said that she didn't pick out songs that meant anything to her.
I think its us, her fans, who are making the connection.. It was the Pet Shop Boys who wrote the lyrics.. The lyrics may have meant something to them.

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 22:33:40 But as Dusty didn't write the lyrics to any of these songs it seems far fetched that they reflect her life.

I seem to recall a comment made by Dusty that suggested that she didn't record songs that were personal for her, she recorded songs that she liked to sing. But one can't help make that kind of connection for certain songs...

Posted - 28/08/2008 : 20:22:40 And wasn't it Ms Spiteri who got berated somewhere else on this forum for penning and singing songs that reflected her private life?

I suppose it does Carole, but for some reason In Private hits me more to think that way.

I like them both, but In Private has a slight edge. I always think of Dusty being concerned about her personal private life when she sings this song.
Marty
I think what you say, Marty, applies to both of these songs.
