Posted - 25/06/2008 : 19:41:50 I'll try Janie's suggestion of a distinct thread for date-relevant chart regarding Dusty & I found two surveys dated for the week ending June 25 the first from 1964 for WKNR Detroit:
1. Rag Doll - 4 Seasons 6 2. I Wanna Love Him - Jellybeans 4 3. I Get Around/Don't Worry Baby - B. Boys 3 4. Memphis - Johnny Rivers 1 5. Do I Love You - Ronettes 21 6. People - Barbra Streisand 5 7. Notice how WKNR has W&H as a tandem entry for Dusty & Dionne Warwick which seems to be unique to this station, Dionne's version having been a B-side over a year previous: WKNR was apparently also playing not only Dionne's current Walk on By but its B-side!
And in honour of this being the first week of summer here's no#14 song on WKNR for this week in 1964: Summertime USA by the Pixies 3! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfyXA2ldHYk

Posted - 18/09/2008 : 02:43:40 I don't imagine Dusty would have particularly enjoyed Born a Woman but she might have approved of the singer's coiff! Born a Woman actually was a hit in the UK entering the Top 50 the same week as All I See is You: its peak was only no#24 but the similar followup Single Girl not only reached no#15 in '67 but was re-released in '75 with a no#35 peak. Another song Sandy cut in '67: Sunglasses, was a no#18 UK hit for Tracey Ullman in '84.
BTW I was (gasp!) mistaken when I said Sandy cut her own tracks at American Studios where Dusty in Memphis would be recorded - rather Sandy's own tracks were cut in Nashville. However Sandy was produced by Chips Moman who owned American Studios where she'd initially worked as a receptionist graduating to session singing & demo cutting: it was Sandy's demo of Born a Woman that elicited Moman's interest in recording Sandy herself. Sandy's extensive body of session work - among others she backed Bobby Bare, Bobby Goldsboro, Elvis Presley(Kentucky Rain, The Wonder of You, In the Ghetto), Tommy Roe, Skeeter Davis, Joe Tex & Percy Sledge (When a Man Loves a Woman) - suggests a vocal talent perhaps more substantial than her hits indicate: like Dusty's friend Lesley Gore the double-tracking used to give Sandy's vocals a trademark sound likely also somewhat disguise her vocal strength.
Sandy's Pop career was basically over by the end of '67. In the 70s she resumed recording focussing on the Country field meeting with desultory success: she also performed at county fairs & similar venues with her Elvis impersonator husband. Sandy recorded a bluegrass album in 2002 & reportedly has a number of recent recordings she'll be making available through I-tunes & other internet download services. |

Posted - 17/09/2008 : 20:22:05 Here's the Top 30 for the week ending September 17 1966 as listed by KLIV 1590 AM in San Jose CA:
1. Cherish - Association Last week:6 2. What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted - Jimmy Ruffin 2 3. Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine - Beatles 1 4. You're Gonna Miss Me - 13th Floor Elevators 7 5. Born A Woman - Sandy Posey 9 6. You Can't Hurry Love - Supremes 3 7. Black Is Black - Los Bravos 14 8. Sunny Afternoon - Kinks 17 9. 7 & 7 Is - Love 5 10. Rumors - Syndicate Of Sound 12 11. Working In The Coal Mine - Lee Dorsey 11 12. Sunshine Superman - Donovan 4 13. Mind Excursion - Tradewinds 15 14. Beauty Is Only Skin Deep - Temptations 22 15. Function At The Junction - Shorty Long 8 16. Tar & Cement - Verdelle Smith 10 17. Reach Out-I'll Be There - Four Tops 27 18. The Joker Went Wild - Brian Hyland 21 19. Walk Away Renee - Left Banke 29 20. Land Of 1,000 Dances - Wilson Pickett 16 21. Bus Stop - Hollies 23 22. Turndown Day - Cyrkle 24 23. How Sweet It Is - Jr. Walker 26 24. Kids Are All Right - The Who 25 25. Flamingo - Herb Alpert 30 26. 96 Tears - ? & Mysterians -- 27. Respectable - Outsiders 28 28. Last Train To Clarksville - Monkees -- 29. See See Rider - Animals -- 30. All I See Is You - Dusty Springfield --
Dusty is one of only three vocalistes on the chart, the others being the similar-sounding Verdelle Smith (Tar & Cement) & Sandy Posey whose Born a Woman would vie with Dusty's YDHTSYLM for the Best Rock & Roll Solo Vocal Performance Grammy: Bobby Darin's If I Were a Carpenter & Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Were Made For Walkin' would also be contenders in this field taken by Eleanor Rigby which was entered as a solo performance by Paul McCartney despite (as evidenced in this survey) being credited to the Beatles (who never won a Grammy). Incredibly - IMO - Born a Woman was also nominated for the Female Vocal Performance Grammy while YDHTSYLM was not (These Boots are Made For Walkin' also ran in this field as did albums by Ella Fitzgerald & Barbra Streisand: Eydie Gorme's If He Walked Into My Life was the winner). I'd never guess that Ms Posey recorded at the American Studios that would give us DIM: see what you think! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtYdq62iiGM |

Posted - 09/08/2008 : 18:34:14 As far as I can ascertain Dusty's only no#1 position on a national chart besides YDHTSYLM in the UK was with the Springfields in Australia where Silver Threads & Golden Needles was no#1 for the weeks of September 1, 8 & 15 1962. YDHTSYLM peaked at no#2 in Australia (that was also the Oz peak for Wishin' & Hopin'). YDHTSYLM had a no#4 peak in the US, Canada & Ireland (the US peak is as per Billboard - rival music industry mag Cash Box afforded YDHTSYLM a no#3 peak). |
| Brian |
Posted - 08/08/2008 : 07:24:13 We all know YDHTSYLM was Dusty's only number one single in the UK, but was it number one anywhere else in the world? Did Dusty have a number one anywhere with another recording? In the sixties our local paper (The Oxford Mail) published each week Oxford's 'top ten' records - Dusty made it to number one on two other occasions with IOWTBWY and IJDKWTDWM for one week each.

Posted - 23/07/2008 : 23:06:00 I somehow overlooked this chart til now: Springfield [!] Massachussetts seems to be virtually the only market to almost afford Top 30 success to Willie & Laura Mae Jones (July 25 rank is no#48). Dusty shares this chart with the songs's composer Tony Joe White as well as her Grammy competitors Jackie DeShannon & Vikki Carr: also her sometime rivals Dionne Warwick & Petula Clark are each - like Dusty - represented by a track whose mild national impact evinced career ecliption as the 60s waned.

My personal pick has to be My World Fell Down by Sagittarius debuting at no#44. The song had been a British single for the Ivy League: Chad & Jeremy producer Gary Usher suggested the duo cover the song for the US market & when they balked Usher had a session group - which included Glen Campbell & Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys - cut the track. My World Fell Down by Sagittarius only reached no#70 in Billboard but received enough airplay in the Pacific northwest to become one of the most evocative songs of the Summer of Love for me! http://youtube.com/watch?v=Qs-oGEhDP0E
