Posted - 12/09/2008 : 02:16:32 What's happening with "The Spirit of Black Rock"? (you might have asked yourself lately...or not)
"The Spirit of Black Rock" Fife & Drum Corps to Participate in Youth Parade to honor the Connecticut 29th Black Civil War Unit
On Friday, September 26, 2008, "The Spirit of Black Rock" Fife & Drum Corps of Bridgeport will be marching with students from all over Connecticut in a Youth Arm Band Parade in honor of the members of Connecticut 29th Colored Regiment C.V. Infantry. Students will meet and hear the stories of the descendents of black and Native American soldiers that fought in the American Civil War, then participate in the parade by wearing a special armband with the name of Connecticut 29th soldiers that represented their respective towns in the Civil War.
The parade is one event in the week long celebration commencing with the unveiling of a monument to the Connecticut 29th in New Haven's Criscoula Park, the site of the soldiers' first encampment along the Mill River at Grapevine Park. This will kick off a grand series of events that culminates on Friday, the 26th. History, pageantry, art and exciting re-enactments will mark the special festivities dedicated to the valorous soldiers of the Connecticut 29th that fought and gave their lives for the cause of American freedom.
"The Spirit of Black Rock" fife and drum corps is from the Black Rock section of Bridgeport and represents the 1st Connecticut Cavalry Volunteers from the Bridgeport area who fought in the Civil War under Major Morehouse.

Posted - 08/05/2008 : 02:30:33 Today was Crazy Hat Day at Goodwill Industries here in Bridgeport. We helped our program participants make hats out of newspapers, then decorate them with flowers and other deco found in our Thrift Shop. We donned our fancy chapeaus and joined other participants and employees in the cafeteria for an ice cream social this afternoon.

Friday we are having an Ethnic Potluck Luncheon, celebrating the many heritages of our staff members. (I am bringing Transylvania goulash. )

I know that I'll love the sound of fifes, especially when T is playing hers.

The prevalence of drugs everywhere, is scary.

Posted - 12/11/2007 : 21:13:45 The drug dealers flat in the house next door to us was raided at the weekend... They've been evicted and there's metal sheets covering the front windows now.
We knew it was going on for ages, but what can you do? The police clearly knew, as they were often loitering around the house, and they raided it a few months ago but nothing happened. I suppose unless they catch them in the act there's not a lot they can do. |

Posted - 12/11/2007 : 03:45:29 Yes, Linda, I mastered the 6 songs I was working on, but there are still about 20 or so more that I have to commit to memory before St Patrick's Day. Gonna be spending LOTS more time in the attic. It's not soundproof, but it puts two floors between my fifing and my family. (Fifes are meant to be played at one volume level - LOUD!)

Our neighborhood Fife & Drum Corps, 'The Spirit of Black Rock', participated in a local Veteran's Day parade today - followed by a little nosh in the park.

Just a bunch of Connecticut Yankees enjoying the day.(Good thing I got a 'high and tight' haircut the day before or the hat wouldn't have fit! )

Mark, Wow, a new bus shelter - that really isn't terribly exciting, but it's better than hearing about the latest murder.
LOL! That's not funny really, is it .. But it's so true!

The girls I heard on that South London train where white and about 16 years old. They seem to like talking in a Jamaican accent, even though they have nothing to do with the West Indies. |

Posted - 23/09/2007 : 15:19:19 It's so boring in my 'hood nothing exciting or eventful ever happens! It's so boring that the front page news in one of our local free papers was the installation of a new bus shelter in one of the streets!.......yawn, yawn!!
I was intrigued by the girls doing fake accents!.....though I was always under the impression that 'init' was a term used by Asian girls, not Carribean girls!
Seen the Movie 'Bend it like Beckham' or remember the comedy series 'Goodness gracious me'?.....loads of 'init's' there!

Save me a seat!

I didn't see you there on Tuesday night, Carole. Where were you seated?
The gathering of friends, family and neighbors went very well. The weather cooperated and it was a beautiful night for an outdoor informal concert. Everyone seemed to enjoy the chow and the fife and drum music.

I wish, Tere...
I'm glad it went well, it sounds like a really good community spirit exists in your area.
Something sadly lacking in most areas of the UK.
Sounds like the fife playing is coming on a treat.
