A sad August 15 musical milestone that occurred this very day - the passing of Jerry Wexler. And a belated notice of the passing yesterday at age 82 of Lita Roza the first female singer to hit no#1 on the UK charts (How Much Was that Doggie in the Window 1953).

It was on August 15 1958 that Buddy Holly wed Maria Elena Santiago in Lubbock Texas - coincidentally it was on August 15 1984 & in Lubbock that Holly's manager Norman Petty died of leukemia.

On August 15 1966 Scott Walker of the Walker Brothers was hospitalized after being discovered unconscious in his gas-filled London apartment.

At 5:07 pm August 15 1969 Ritchie Havens took the stage erected on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel NY to open the Woodstock Music & Art Festival - also performing that night was Melanie who wrote of the experience in the song Lay Down (Candles in the Rain): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7cye6h6moU

August 15 birthdays: jazz pianist Oscar Peterson (1925-2007), Bill Pinkney of the Drifters (1925-2007), Bobby Helms (My Special Angel) (1933-1997), Bobby Byrd of the Famous Flames [James Brown] (1934-2007), singer/actor Jim Dale (b.1935), chanteux Sylvie Vartan (b.1944)/Patsy Gallant (b.1948), composer Jimmy Webb (b.1946), Bobby Caldwell (What You Won't Do For Love) (b.1951).

BTW Sylvie Vartan was one of the musical guests in the 1963 Britpop film Just For Fun which also featured the Springfields. Of course Jim Dale wrote the lyrics to the music of Tom Springfield for the movie theme Georgy Girl which was a hit for the Seekers.

Jimmy Webb was nineteen when his song My Christmas Tree was recorded for the Supremes' 1965 Merry Christmas album. His first hit came two years later courtesy of the 5th Dimension - here's Up Up & Away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3pMyEJVqfE

And it was on August 14 1958 that Elvis Presley's mother Gladys died at age 48 of heart failure: altho Elvis was stationed at a German army base he was granted leave enabling him to be with Gladys when she died.

Here's Sarah Brightman at the launch (tee hee) of her career, singing I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper with Hot Gossip:

...and who remembers the rumour/theory that it wasn't really Paul McCartney on the album cover.

It was said that, because Paul was walking across the zebra crossing in bare feet wearing a dark suit, that we were being subliminally told that he had died and that person was a 'lookalike.'

I know... looking back on it, the idea was ludicrous, but we all did wonder, for a short time.

August 7 is the birthday of Dusty's duet partner BJ Thomas born 1942 in Hugo Oklahoma; singing the theme from the sitcom Growing Pains* will be a mere footnote in a four decade career that's seen BJ enter the Top 40 fifteen times & topping the charts twice: the estimated figure for his record sales are seventy million. Happy birthday Billy Joe.

And come come out wherever you are to salute Billie Burke: "Glinda" was born August 7 1884 (she died 1970).

Herb Reed of the Platters is 77 today while sometime Bananarama member Jacquie O'Sullivan turns 48.

It was on August 7 1984 that Esther Phillips (Release Me) died: she'd have turned 49 that December.

And it was on August 7 1970 that Christine McVie joined the lineup of Fleetwood Mac.

*Growing Pains ran seven seasons from 1985 with the original version of the theme song As Long As We've Got Each Other performed by by BJ Thomas solo turned into a duet for the second season when Jennifer Warnes' vocal was added: Dusty's voice replaced Jennifer's in the duet for season 4 only. Here's an audio clip of BJ & Dusty with a homemade video by the posting party: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOv0q8VCZMQ

And happy birthday to Barbara Windsor of the Carry On series & Eastenders - & a musical stage actress - who turns 71 today. Today would also have been the birthday of a lady who couldn't really sing but we loved her anyway: Lucille Ball (1911-1989). And sadly it was on August 6 2004 that Rick James died.

Here's the 1977 disco version of the I Love Lucy Theme by the Wilton Place Street Band set to a montage of clips from the TV series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvEFw6UH1ck - BTW the vocals are by Lynda Lawrence of the Supremes & her sister Sundray Tucker who replaced Cindy Birdsong in Patti Labelle & the Bluebelles.

Marilyn Monroe.....Did she fall or was she pushed?.. I know it was neither, and she died of a drug overdose, but it was abit convenient for The Kennedy Clan wasn't it?
