Posted - 15/05/2008 : 23:04:37 OK we've had a number of "what's your favourite" recently so how about selecting what you think is the worst song Dusty ever recorded? .....or should I say least favourite
If we can keep it to 60's and early 70's (upto Cameo) to make it slightly more difficult I guess. |

Posted - 22/05/2008 : 23:49:48 I think the thing is Dusty could sing anything - she was a musical chameleon. It's difficult to like absolutely everything an artist does especially someone as diverse as Dusty.
The thing with Dusty for me is I absolutely love roughly 95% of her official output probably because it's a succinct incredibly good and quality controlled collection. I just like some tracks better than others as we all do. The songs I don't like that much are down to personal irritations with lyrics really, not Dusty. I can't think of any artist right now that, for me, can even come close to that kind of rating.

Posted - 22/05/2008 : 22:44:22 Interesting how we are all huge Dusty fans here, but all of us have our faves and dislikes. I think If You Go Away is among Dusty's very best and absolutely love her dramatics songs and her songs sung in French. To me this is when she is at her best and she stands out from any other singer. I also like La Bamaba very much. I like I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love, but wouldn't put it among my top faves. Occupy Your Mind, Tupelo Honey are both OK, but not among my faves. Sandra is an interesting song, parts of it makes me think of well you know who! I was never too big on Something Special and can take of leave Love Me By Name.

If You Go Away IS a great Dusty performance. I guess I remember that song being sung to death by every diva on TV. Vicki Carr used to cry everytime she sang it. This is a rare Dusty song that is not on my Walkman. But I really like 'Love Me By Name'!

Posted - 22/05/2008 : 10:08:52 I don't think Dusty over-acts at all on If You Go Away infact I think it's a wonderful performance. I first heard the song by Shirley Bassey and hated it, but Dusty's performance is much gentler and it suits her voice so well.
It Begins Again is an album I especially like except for Love Me By Name -dreadful song! |

Posted - 21/05/2008 : 23:02:13 Hi-De- Ho is one I usually skip.
Something Special..is not special for me.
and also Occupy Your Mind.
The rest I love!!

Posted - 21/05/2008 : 22:57:19 Well this is a bit of a difficult thread... What I like about Dusty is you can tell by the tracks she didn't release that she didn't like them much either; she was Ms Quality Control! So I won't select from those tracks (and most of them were fine just not superb or definitive takes, or, they just had bad lyrics eg 'All the King's Horses').
From the output that was released in her life time up until 'Cameo', I have to include some great tracks that just irritate me. They include 'If You Go Away' and 'Come Back to Me'. The first because it doesn't sound authentic (Dusty over-acts but I love the section sung in French) and the second because of that loud blasting orchestration. Dusty's vocals are superb on both tracks. I don't like the lyrics to 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' either but you can't beat that performance.
I'm just grateful for access to anything Dusty recorded. As others have noted you have to go right up to her last albums to really find the truly bad songs - I mean lyrically. The albums from 'It Begins Again' were all set aside in my record collection - the lyrics were mostly cringe making (but I was very young) especially 'Sandra' and even 'I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love' ('Just go away with your fantasy Dusty and stop going on about it. I'm dying like the rose on the vine...through boredom!' - of course she should have a hit with this). Now I find these songs are not so bad (and Dusty's vocals are superb) and I have great respect for the bravery of 'White Heat' and I'm listening to 'A Very Fine Love' again'. I guess I'm getting old enough now.

Posted - 21/05/2008 : 20:52:12 I'm quite surprised by some of the replies. I really like "sea And Sky", "What Did She Know About Railways" and "Make it With You".
My contenders for Dusty's worst song include;
"La Bamba"
"Hi-De-Ho(THat Old Sweet Roll)"
can't think of any more at the moment.

Mine's 'Magnificent Sanctuary Band', what ever did she see in that song?
Frans
Frans I think Dusty is fantastic on that song. I bought the record by David Clayton-Thomas (Blood Sweat & Tears).

as the songs some folk are mentioning are ssssllliding into the 80's, i'd have to say positively and unequivocally that 'sometimes like butterflies is the worst record EVER. (though i do blame peter stringfellow)
It's another one I like especially the 12" version with the volume up. |

Posted - 20/05/2008 : 01:50:24 No problem Brian, it's not one of my favorite songs either, nor least favorite, I just thought it would be a cool user name. If I had known there was someone else using the title, I would have went with Baby Blue, which I use on another forum.

This is FAR more difficult than picking a favourite!...however the one I dislike most is 'Earthbound Gypsy' (sorry Marty!). I have never liked this. Also songs that do nothing for me are 'Sandra', 'Love me by name', 'Sweet lover no more' and..shock horror - 'Wishin' & hopin'

Carole you have to admire Dusty for performing songs other than her big ballady style. At Midnight is a dance song which I think is very catchy, as I said the performance here is NOT her best and she stumbled a but during her dance routine - however she performed it brilliantly on the Dutch show along with YDHTSYLM & Quiet Please There's A Lady Onstage.
Dusty was never boring and always kept up to date with musical styles. |
