We are coming up to the anniversary 30 years ago next week of the death of Elvis Presley. Elvis was most probably the greatest name ever in popular music (not to us here - we know!), but in general terms.
Do you remember hearing the news of Elvis's death?
I remember hearing it on Radio Luxemburg around midnight on that day.
The memory fades, but I think it was the dj Tony Prince who gave out the news 'The king is dead' ...my heart missed a beat ..it was SUCH a shock - almost unbelievable.
Who else can remember?

Brian.

I'm gonna be the first to admit that I can remember the sad event Brian.

It stacks up with the death of both the Kennedys,John Lennon and Diana for shock value..

Although for many years there were rumours that Elvis had been a CIA agent, he wasn't really dead , he'd been spotted on the banks of Loch Lomond wearing a kilt etc...

This always seems to happen when iconic individuals die unexpectedly.

Its just a way of coping with it, I suppose.

It's amazing how many great singers, and famous people died so young.

I wasn't born at the time but apparently my Dad, who was on a camping holiday with my Mum's family at the time in a very remote part of Wales, saw it on a newspaper in a shop and did not speak to anyone for two days because he was so gutted. They still make fun of him to this day for that which I think is really mean as Elvis was and still is his biggest hero.

Well - at least he didn't die at the year of rock death (27) like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and James Morrison... But still - I think I can imagine what it must have felt like for his fans when he died. I mean he is one of these people that everyone recognises by his first name!

Anyway, I shall put an Elvis CD on now...

Elvis' death was another of those occasions when I can remember exactly what I was doing at the time I heard the news.

I was getting ready to go to work and was in the living room faffing around as I still do first thing in the morning. The radio was on and the news came through. I recall so vividly going to the foot of the stairs and yelling up to my husband..'Elvis Presleys' dead'.

Amazing how such a memory sticks with you.

My mother came into my bedroom holding up a newspaper announcing Elvis' death. It's ironic as she's not a music fan, but it was such big news, that even she was shocked.

I think Marc Bolan died 29 September 1977 - bummer for him, so soon after Elvis.

Yes, I remember hearing of Elvis' Death, I was working in a TV shop at the time, and recall seeing sobbing American Women on the Streets, and hearing Ann-Margret (a close Friend of Elvis) was devastated.....I also recall Marc Bolan's premature Death shorthly afterwards when the Mini his Girlfriend (Gloria Jones) was driving crashed into a Tree in South-West London, as I recall Gloria was prosecuted for her driving....

I remember hearing it on the car radio on my way to a friends house.
We played Elvis music all day as we were both not working as it was school holidays.

It came as a real shock. The pictures in the papers the next day were a shock too as he looked bloated and ill in some of them.

There's a programme about Elvis on Radio Four 10.30am tomorrow.

Trailer to it said;

'When Elvis died there were 200 Elvis Impersonators.

Today there are 200,000 Elvis Impersonators.

If this trend continues..

..by the year 2060, One in four of us will be an Elvis Impersonator.

Do you think that you'll be one?

Yes, most definately!

There's only 200,000 today? I thought there'd be more than that.

I'm currently playing Barbra Streisand BUT I will dig out my Elvis tapes. I'll have to rig up my cassette player though (currently out of commission but it CAN be fixed by 'Handyman Janie' so probably won't be until later this evening. It WILL be done though, can't let this anniversary go without due respect being paid

Janie x53

As an aside, I should say that 'Handyman Janie' here has just dropped the hot air blowtorch on her leg whilst removing cracked stainer from the decking/windowsills around the house. Huge burn....... OUCH......
