X-Factor Winner from a couple of years back Leona Lewis has stormed to the TOP of the American Chart with her single' Bleeding Love'

Its twenty years since a female Brit singer accomplished this.

The singer who hit number ONE in the US chart twenty years ago was Kim Wilde with her single.. ' Hangin On'..

Anyhow theres abit more about it here:

Congratulations are in order for sure, but the actual song is pretty weak compared to the others that made it to number one in the USA (Pet Clark - "Downtown", Lulu -"To sir with love", Kim Wilde -"You keep me hangin' on")- ALL had something, and a TUNE!
"Bleeding love" is very 'today' - all vocal gymnastics and something that will be forgotten in 5 years time.

One thing - Didn't DUSTY reach number one with THE PET SHOP BOYS (WHIDTDT)?? According to the CASHBOOK CHARTS it did!

It's the Billboard Hot 100 chart that's being cited: WHIDTDT had a Hot 100 peak of no#2.

Hahahahaha!!!!!!!! oh well, her new one is good 'Better In Time' and I think 'Footprints In The Sand' was fab for the sports relief single. But you're right Louise, 'Bleeding Love' I think will be her signature song now.

I never said I liked it!...

In fact, I think its too contrived, and her singing is a poor mans version of Mariah Carey.....

I was surprised to learn this as I hadn't caught much of a buzz over here for Leona. I've seen her video a couple of times & she can certainly sing: it's a shame she wasn't provided with a song!

I also hadn't realized that no Fembrit had topped Billboard's Hot 100 since Kim Wilde with You Keep Me Hangin' On in '86. Nothing against Kim who should have had a big US hit with Kids In America but her version of YKMHO illustrates how a track can reach no#1 & still not make any lasting impression on the public consciousness - Donna Lewis' I Love You Always Forever from '96 has retained a much higher profile than Kim's no#1 despite "only" peaking at no#2. And within the last few years so many avenues have developed to expose music outside traditional radio play that a lot of songs blip very loudly on the public's radar without ever entering the Hot 100.
