I read it in the magazine, and it was a treat. Love all three of those ladies. Joni's over the top egotistical, and that's a bit of a turn off, but I still love her work.

I've always been fascinated by the women of Tin Pan Alley - the songwriting teams in the early pre-Beatle 60s - Carole King, Ellie Greenwich, Cynthia Weil. They were raised to be nice Jewish housewives, but they churned out hits instead.
In the Vanity Fair article, Carole King is the most surprising. Wrote all these great songs, Dusty's favorite composer, had the biggest selling album of all time "Tapestry"... and then proceeded to be abused by a succession of no good husbands. Not just her, but the music suffered. Now we know why she wasn't writing for Dusty or anyone in the 70s or 80s. Sad story in a way. |
