Have you ever been aware of a singer who has been around for years but never really taken much notice of them?
It's happened to me with Caterina Valente, I recently bought two of her cd's and each one includes two old albums. She is great! She has an amazing voice and range and like Dusty sings a wide selection of songs. I was surprised to hear "Estrada do sol" better know to us on Dusty's "See All Her Faces" album as "Come For A Dream".
I will be buying more cd's by Caterina soon!

It took a while but eventually I 'discovered' Hanne Boel (a Danish singer with an incredible voice and range)..then there was Renee Geyer the Australian singer who can sing anything...and make it sound good (we ALL know someone else like that don't we?!)
Finally - SHOCK HORROR - Marc Bolan ....didn't like him/T Rex in the seventies, but now I find his voice amazing.
Other 'nice finds' are Toni Lynn Washington, Eva Cassidy, Norah Jones, Anastacia, Judy Boucher and Dr John.

The Italian singer Mia Martini had a fabulous voice...Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.
Her song ... Gli uomini non cambiano... is suberb..... And i would have loved to hear Dusty sing this as well, as Dusty loved Italian ballads.

I know that name, didn't she sing Libera in the Eurovision Song Contest? I have that record, yes she was good I never knew she had died. |

 I discovered Caterina Valente years ago when I heard her live album played as background music on the local info bulletin TV channel. By an incredible stroke of luck I was living in Calgary in the mid-80s - which overall was not that lucky except that Caterina gave a rare North American performance in Calgary at that time. She sang most of the songs I'd heard on her live album including the French version of Windmills of Your Mind & her own hits Malagueña & The Breeze & I & also the Valente number that had first caught my ear Canto de Ossana.
Dee Dee Bridgewater is one of the world's premier jazz vocalists - she was just admitted to the National Order of Letters in France where she's lived for some time. Early in her career she made some mainstream Pop/R&B recordings & altho this foray doesn't seem highly regarded her 1976 album Dee Dee Bridgewater - overseen by Jerry Wexler himself - is one of my favorite albums: while it only features eight tracks - & two of them are disco & ballad versions of the Platters' My Prayer - each track's so rich that the sum affords a fuller listening experience than most double album sets. Both the aforementioned versions of My Prayer are heavenly & Dee Dee makes Hall & Oates [S]He's Gone her own. It's her soaring rendition of Peter Skellern's My Lonely Room - a song which should have been a hit for someone - that really makes the Dee Dee Bridgewater album a knockout for me.
