What do YOU consider the most important records of the sixties? Let's try and list the TEN you think will be played in 100 - no 200 years time. Dusty will not be eligible..for obvious reasons! You can choose records from your own country, if they mean so much to you - even if no one else has heard of them! Here are my 10 selections (in no particular order):- 1. You've lost that lovin' feelin' - Righteous Brothers. A record so wonderful, and so different from anything else that had gone before it. Great vocals and superb production. 2. River deep-mountain high - Ike & Tina Turner. No apologies for including TWO Phil Spector productions. This was such a ground-breaking sound in 1966, and it sounds just as brilliant today as it did then. A masterpiece. 3. I want to hold your hand - The Beatles. Now, I'm not a great lover of The Beatles, but there's no escaping the impact this record made worldwide. 4. God only knows - The Beach Boys. It was a close thing with 'Good vibrations', but this one came out top because of the melody and simplicity of the lyrics 5. (I can't get no)Satisfaction - Rolling Stones They had so many great records, but this HAS to be the one. The intro is one of the greatest ever to grace a pop record - it hits you straight away. A GREAT rock record 6. Will you love me tomorrow - The Shirelles. The real start of the girl-group era. A wonderful teenage anthem. After 46 years this record STILL sends a shiver down my spine 7. I can't stop loving you - Ray Charles Bringing 'country' with 'soul' to the mass audience, this was Ray's finest hour. One of the greatest love songs of all time 8. - My beloved Motown....you cannot have a list like this without paying R-E-S-P-E-C-T to the top label of all time. Who'd have thought when Berry Gordy set up his small record label in the late fifties we could expect some, if not the best popular music ever recorded to hit us for the next 30+ years? 8. Dancing in the street - Martha & The Vandellas You KNEW I'd pick this didn't you?! This record means SO MUCH to me, I love it more than life itself I will never tire of the 'sledghammer' intro, the fabulous vocals, the wonderful production, the 'warm' feeling I get whenever I hear it (it's very often!!). I LIKE IT 9. Do you love me - The Contours This is the 'left field' record in my top ten. A huge influence on the British beat groups - several recorded it, but never came anywhere near the original. 2 AND A HALF MINUTES OF PURE ENERGY...AND IT EVEN TELLS YOU THE YEAR IT WAS RECORDED! 10. It might as well rain until September - Carole King The perfect pop record....Carole King was (and is) a genius, so talented. The production is so 'American teenager', but it has stood the test of time like very few others That's it then - the ten records I consider to be 'milestones of the sixties' - how about you?? Of course I would have liked to include 'The house of the rising sun' by The Animals, 'Rag doll' by The Four Seasons, 'Runaway' by Del Shannon, 'Reach out I'll be there' by The Four Tops, 'I've never loved a man' by Aretha Franklin, 'Mr Tambourine man' by The Byrds, 'Baby love' by The Supremes, 'Tell him' by The Exciters, 'Leader of the pack' by The Shangri-Las, 'Walk on by' by Dionne Warwick, 'Bobby's girl' by Susan Maughan, 'Chapel of love' by The Dixie Cups, 'You never can tell' by Chuck Berry, 'My Guy' by Mary Wells, 'My girl' by The Temptations, 'In the midnight hour' by Wilson Pickett, 'When I'm gone' by Brenda Holloway, 'It's not unusual' by Tom Jones, 'Be my baby' by The Ronettes, 'Da doo ron ron' by The Crystals, 'Rainy day women no's 12 & 35' by Bob Dylan..... ...but that would have made it a top 30!!!

Same for me, Brian. I think you've picked out most of my faves and I echo your sentiments about them all.
The Ronettes 'Baby I Love You' would replace 'River Deep Mountain High' for me. For some reason I never really got that song.I think its just abit too manic.
I WILL come up with MY Top Ten. However, it will take some time to think about! Good idea for a thread, Brian, thanks!
