Is it safe to assume that Dusty grew to dislike this song? I'm curious, based on her comment on stage at RAH, calling it a "joke song". And I wonder if it was a must-have for her live shows because so many people connect her with that song.
I rather dislike it, honestly. Dusty does a fine vocal performance, and the music itself is also not bad, but the lyrics are horrid. What was Hal David thinking! There are several songs by Dusty that I think have some pretty rotton lyrics but I think this one takes the cake. The underlying message is that you have to change who you are for someone else.
Interestingly, this is arguably one of the top three songs that Dusty is know for in North America (the other two being IOWTBWY and YDHTSYLM)

I love the song! - I see what you mean though. I saw The Making Of A Hit and Dusty said herself that she didn't like the song and couldn't take it seriously (she burst into a giggle).

One of the things we have to be mindful of when considering the written word (song lyrics here) is that they have to be viewed in an historical context. Good God, I sound just like a Social Historian...how strange is that??!!
By the time Dusty denounced the lyrics, she was well on the road to becoming her own girl...the world had moved on, she had moved on.
Of course those lyrics sound absurd to us....however, they epitomised much of what has gone on in the past. Indeed, if I'm brutally honest, if you listen to how some of the young girls in this day and age sell their own identities in order to get themselves a man/partner I actually wonder how much times have really changed. In all honesty, for a certain section of our populations, I suspect very little has!
The very philosophical and ever cynical Admin person who is........

Yea... Unfortunately, the words were acceptable in the Sixties(Just!)
But with the onset of feminism, the birth pill, equality and Germaine Greer.. ..the words became laughable.
Thats why, Dusty called it a 'joke song' in my opinion.
I consider it a pleasing little ditty though, just IGNORE the words!

I too just tend to ignore the words.Dusty always said she ignored lyrics--though I'm not sure I believed her!! I just love the way she sings this song. Janie is right when she says some girls sell their identities even today--just to get a partner. Stand next to them in a Supermarket or sit near them in a cafe and you will hear them doing everything they can for him/her!!

I suppose the theme has always been the same throughout history, of having to change your behaviour to be accepted. I'm hyper-sensitive to that issue, it burns my britches, lol.
But I appreciate the comments, and I will continue to try ignoring the lyrics, or, at best, replace them with the RAH re-write, ha ha.
Dusty's vocals are great, and the melody is quite interesting. No problems there!

I think I must be slow or something because I can honestly say that I have never taken exception to the lyrics. Anybody who knows me will not credit that statement I'm sure...they still don't bother me strangely enough.
Now.... would I change my behaviour to suit another? Your comments on a postcard please

OK now I have to go listen to the track cos I don't think I listen to lyrics much..except Breakfast In Bed lol. I must be a melody listener - maybe cos I love to dance so listen for the beat? I like to pick out musical instruments and harmonies on tracks too.

Yeah, Janie, unfortunately I must agree with you on that.
I remember reading those articles and sitting in on those "conscious raising" sessions as a teenager in the late 60s and marveling how things were changing! Just in time, too.
Some things DID change for the better, but as you said, some things have changed very little.

Sara -
Growing older is mandatory - growing up is an option. I believe in taking that growing up stuff in moderation.

I may have told this story before..... but....
Many years ago I was a member of a Feminist Women's Radio Collective (...now there's a word one hardly ever hears these days!)
I would play Dusty from time to time and whenever we selected Wishin' and Hopin' I would provide a light hearted "parental guidance advisory" - any young women listening could only do so if they had an adult close by to explain this piece of history!

That's hilarious!!!
I think fashion magazines and teen magazines should come with the same "parental guidance" label. The messages in advertising, etc. are awful.
