I'd never heard of this song until I seen Dusty perform it on the Royal Albert Hall DVD - and I think it's one of the highlights of that concert.

Here's Linda Ronstadt singing the song (if I could up-load Dusty's version I'd put this in the Compare&Contrast Thread...)

I like Linda Ronstadt's version, but Dusty's version is far superior in my opinion.

What do you think???

I love Linda Ronstadt's powerhouse voice, but I absolutely agree with you, Paul. This song is so beautiful, it's more touching as a self-reflective song the way Dusty delivered her vocals. "Pretty".

I absolutely LOVED Linda Ronstadt in the 70s! She put out the greatest albums then -"Hasten Down the Wind", "Heart Like a Wheel", "Prisoner In Disguise" - and I still listen to them often. She recorded first-time versions of songs by many young writers who later were widely recognized for their talents. "Lose Again", for example.

Dusty's version "far superior"?? I wouldn't say that.

Since we're talking about Linda, does anyone know if there was a lot of cross-over between Linda Ronstadt and Dusty? I know that Linda sang "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" which was a cover from the Springfields (I didn't know that at the time...) and then Dusty did "Lose Again"... but was that the extent of it? Linda and Dusty shared the same vocal range and also seemed to choose songs of a similar genre. I was just wondering.

I didn't realize that "Silver Threads" was a Springfields song, either. Loved Linda's kickass country-rockin' version. In fact it was my and my friends' favorite singalong song when we were out cruisin' around and "actin' the fool".

Linda also recorded "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" on her "Winter Light" CD in 1993. Gotta give Dusty the nod on that song.
And she sings "Oh No, Not My Baby" on this CD, also.

No contest for me... Dusty takes it easily.

The way she sang 'Lose Again 'on the RAH video was one of the most moving pieces of singing I've ever seen.

Linda sings it....... Dusty LIVES it...and you live it with her.

Thanks for the 'Linda' video Paul.

I have to agree with Carole; this is my favourite song in the RAH concert and I think you'd be pretty hard pushed to find anyone who can deliver a song the way Dusty could (IMHO anyway!)

I remember being a big Linda Ronstadt fan in the early 70's. If I had heard Linda sing this song I would have liked it, but not loved it. There is just something in the heartbreaking sound of Dusty's voice that makes this song what I'm guessing Karla Bonoff meant it to sound like. Then again, maybe I'm just partial. Big tooth smiley.

I'm thinkin that its not JUST the song OR the performance.

Its the fact that looking at it with hindsight, we now know how vulnerable Dusty was, in her private and public life...

Methinks we connect ALL that knowledge to her performance of the song, which helps us appreciate it even more.
