Who do you think is the male equivalent, in career terms, of Dusty?

Well, I know who YOU perhaps think is the male equivalent Nicky...(Too Much Derren)
...and I think its David Bowie...
However, I'm gonna have to think of this too...Tom Jones, maybe?

Actually, I was thinking more a contempory - a male singer of similar age.
I suppost that would be someone like Gene Pitney. Only thing is, I know nothing much about Piney's career. He did make a comeback in the 1990s, like Dusty, but I don't know about his recording output. |

When you come to think of it Gene is an obvious choice at first glance...even down to the fact that he died quite young.
Do we have any Gene Pitney fans out there who can give us a decent comparison?

I've heard Dusty compared with Elvis Presley in a number of ways.

To be honest I think Elvis is not a bad choice...
-He had this instinct for how to interpret songs -He was a druggie -He could have sung almost everything -He has growing fan clubs even though he is dead
against him being a male version of Dusty would only speak that:
-He was not gay -He had a more stayable life when it comes to relationships -AANNND!!! he served in GERMANY when he was in the army!

How about Tom Jones? Big hits in the sixties at the start of his career Leaner times in the seventies (hit wise), with a couple of 'comebacks'. During the eighties and nineties hit paydirt again with recordings featuring other acts, then had a massive hit with 'Kiss' solo (Dusty with The Pet Shop Boys..then 'Nothing has been proved/ In private' etc) Considered by many to be Britains BEST male singer from the last 40 years (I agree!!) Can still 'sell-out' wherever he performs. I only wish there had been more duets with Dusty - they were on the same wavelength, with a great respect for the American artists they chose to 'cover', not just the well known ones.

"with a great respect for the American artists they chose to cover." I totally agree with that! Mind you, I would have thought that Tom released far more than Dusty, and he was successful in the USA (I can't imagine Dusty ever doing Vegas). He really is very well known throughout the generations.
Therefore,I come to the conclusion that Scott Walker is Dusty's male counterpart. Both huge in the 1960s, then they went underground and became cult artists. Both made 1970s comebacks, and did a commercial together. Both loved, both reclusive. |

you were saying that Elvis wasn't gay, I have read that he may've been bisexual all stemming from when he was in the army. I don't know for sure tho.
I think Tom Jones or Bobby Hatfield

I agree with you, Vera, that Elvis is a good comparison to Dusty, in terms of what they were capable of vocally. They could both sing ANYTHING and make it sound great.
Both Elvis and Dusty sung a lot of songs with very trite lyrics but it never seems to matter because you always BELIEVE what they are singing about. That to me is an essential quality in a singer's voice - if I don't believe what I'm hearing, I ain't interested!
I've just noticed that your original post referred to Dusty's equivalent in career terms, Nicky! I really would have to go and think about that one. |

I'd have to go for Scott Walker too. In terms of their careers I'd say they were quite similar - both started off in groups, gained massive popularity, TV series for the BBC, a wide ranging taste in music, promoted as mainstream entertainers but both longed to be free of the constraints that put on them, both shy people with amazing talent, loss of popularity in the 70's, subsequent comeback and cult-like status.
I'm quite a fan of Scott, in case you hadn't guessed

I liked The Walker Brothers... they made some fab records, but apart from the gorgeous 'Joanna'.. I found Scott's solo efforts a little bit left-field.

Well I've said before that I think there are a lot of similarities between Dusty and Will Young. Sorry don't yawn , it's true! LOL!
They are both white, middle class and gay, come from what they describe as bohemian families and sing soul. Both are extremely versatile and can sing any genre and are fantastic at using their voices to emote and connect to what they are singing. Both are quite zany and eccentric, loved not only for their talent but for their witty and appealing personalities. Both guard their own privacy.
Like Dusty I'm of the opinion that that Will is quite insecure deep down and he is also a perfectionist but probably has more confidence as a singer than Dusty as he has recorded things in one take. He does things Dusty has done such as worn slogans on his t-shirts to make comments. He also has his vices if that's the right word, crutches maybe a better one, drinking and smoking rather a lot (smoking being something he has failed to give up countless times) and using cannabis. I hope that's as far as it goes though. Like Dusty he has had thoughts of living in America, said he wanted to go and live in New York for the lifestyle, despite not having been there at the time. Dusty was a cat lover but Will is a dog lover!
I think possibly they simply have similarites in their personalities that can be found in a lot of creative people.
Their lives and careers can't be compared totally obviously because Will is at present five years into his career. But I do hope both are a lot kinder to him than they were to Dusty.
PS Actually I've just realised I misread Littlebylittle's comment as contemporary rather than comtempory (ah well! )and was just going to say tell us about Derren.

It was very difficult for me to 'compare', but I agree with Scott Walker being the best choice
Ups and downs career wise, both Blonde!, both on the Philips label, London based, etc. etc;
I don't know what Scott is up to these days, but I recall some late night show, possibly Jools Holland, but may not of been, but approximately 10 or so years ago he sung, and the song was absolutely dreadful!

I would say George Michael is a good male equivalent even though he writes songs and Dusty didn't apart from the odd one. They both struggled with personal problems and artistically are very similar in lots of ways. I wish they had recorded together-that would have been good.
