Motown UK have issued two outstanding albums this week. Firstly we have The Elgins (pronounced El-jins)Anthology...a 2 cd set with some amazing tracks from the golden age of Motown. The Elgins had two hits in the UK (both contained here) - 'Put yourself in my place' and 'Heaven must have sent you', but they recorded several 'Motown standards' like 'How sweet it is to be loved by you', 'No time for tears' and 'Your precious love', as well as 'covers' of 'When a man loves a woman', 'It's a mans, mans world', '6345-789' and 'Good lovin'. This is an album for lovers of Motown - the Motown we love from the sixties. It's an album of true Motown - if you like the 'sound' - you'll love this! Also included is their BEST recording - 'Darling baby'..a 'gem' of a track. The second album is slightly 'specialist' Called 'POWER TO THE MOTOWN PEOPLE!' it overviews Motown's civil rights anthems and political soul tracks. Culled mainly from the period 1967 - 75 it features The Temptations, Undisputed Truth, Syreeta, Marvin, Edwin Starr, Willie Hutch, Junior Walker , and various others including the FABULOUS Martha & The Vandellas (I HAD TO GET THAT ONE IN!). Martha's track is 'I should be proud' - one of her most OUTSTANDING records ever. This album is heavy and powerful - the messages in the songs really give a great insight to the struggles the black American people had in that era. MOTOWN STILL RULES!
