I was wondering what everyone thought of the mid eighties song 'Affection' that Dusty recorded?

I thought it was VERY average....and most probably a good idea it wasn't issued.

I hate to have to admit it but I'd never heard the title before. I've made myself feel a little better about that admission though as I've just read about the recording in Paul Howes' book and realise it wasn't really out there.
Paul writes 'During a very quiet period in Dusty's life, she recorded a demo in Los Angeles. 'Affection' was the title of the song and by all accounts Dusty was in good form when she recorded it. However, she was reportedly unhappy with some of the lyrics and was reluctant to finish the recording. It's not known who was producing the session or whether there was a record company involved'. (Paul Howes 'The Complete Dusty Springfield' Reynolds and Hearn 2001)

Thanks very much for posting this Teda, I had never heard it before. It's always exciting to hear a 'new' Dusty recording. Did Dusty record any other tracks around the same time? |

Dear Teda
I'm sorry to have to say that I'd also never heard it before - you've made that possible, so thank you!

I've listened to it for the first time this morning - certainly very different. I noted previously in this thread what Paul Howes had to say about it. I can't blame my system here as all my other recordings are crystal clear, but I did find it quite hard to hear the lyrics with any clarity. Of those of you who were already familiar with this track could you write them out for daft, and now deaf Janie please?
Perhaps you might be happy to copy the lyrics out for us Teda? It would be great if you could.

Paula and anybody else who may be interested - on the LTD, Ro has cleaned up the master version as Teda loaded it and has remixed it. Its on their 'You Set My Dreams To Music Forum' under the 'Affection' thread. Be careful as its the Remix3 version you want.
I've listened to it and to my untrained ear, Ro has done a very good job. It is much 'cleaner' i.e less hiss, less base (so you can't blame your system entirely Paula!). I'm still at a loss for a lot of the lyrics though - simply can't make them out which is most unusual on a Dusty track. There are a couple of calls out for the lyrics to be transcribed, so hopefully we can take a view on the Paul Howes comment.

| I'd not heard this track until Nancy sent it to me ages ago on a CD. It was on a CD of work out songs she'd made for me, I'd not really heard of the track until then, other than the brief comment in the Paul Howes book, so it was a complete surprise! I do quite like it though. Corinna told me she already had the track, but I don't know how she got hold of it. I didn't know there was a Teda connection, I thought the connection was Linda Sparks, at least I think that's what Nancy said. I've been told since that Teda sent a copy of it to Paul Howes, but I'm not sure what came of that. It seems that for a little heard of track it's certainly made the international rounds! |

Thanks for that, Teda. I´m not a big eighties fan and the instrumental part of the song wasn´t my cup of coffee. But I liked the way Dusty´s voice sounded and vocal melodies went slightly minor from time to time, I liked that too.
Love, Kat

I quite liked it, Andy. It's very HiNRG, which of course was current at the time - even down to the trademark synth riff. It was an intelligent direction to try and take - I could see Dusty having potential success with this sort of material at the time. Of course she had more to her than being another Laura Branagan/Bonnie Tyler type of singer, but a follow up album to White Heat with Affection on it could have reflected that.

First time I've heard this track. Thanks Teda for making that possible. It is typical Dusty from that period--80's. I think its difficult to understand all the lyrics because the overall sound is quite nasally. Its always nice to hear a bit of Dusty not heard before.

Thank you for enjoying it. After reading all your posts and seeing that you are true Dusty Fans. I said why not. You have been nothing but true good people. I wanted to share. You keep her alive, and you keep her in my heart. Ms.Sparks I believe gave it to Mr. Howes. I didn't. I gave it to Corrina, I thought she'd like a treat. I like her. This is my treat to you. I have not giving the O.K. for anything else. But you have my permission to do whatever you want. She wouldn't mind. She trusts me. You say what you like I love the comments. You are very honest people. So keep my heart pounding. Love to all Teda. XO.
