Not that we need reminding, but Dusty 'left' us some 8 years ago now (you hear that warbling don't you?........it'd be me Mother trying to teach Dusty...Mary...how to sing!!!...I lived with that for many years so don't laugh, although it IS clearly laughable! I'll do a 'Singing Mod Feature' if you like, to prove that singing talent is NOT in the family!).
So, what is this thread all about then?
Simple.....we can't talk about new tour dates (btw Barbra Streisand has a third UK date and guess who has tickets????!!! ), we can't talk about the latest gossip about her love life (I'll tell you about mine if you like..nah....that's going in my next novel so you'll have to PAY for that AND I'm in negotiation with my other half to ensure no legal action ensues so www.com can naff off on that one!), we can't talk about her latest diva-ish behaviour, whether she has had botox, the name of her new feline friend..................
What I want to know is, what do YOU want to talk about? This is YOUR forum dedicated to the BEST female singer (probably THE best, no BUGGER it [a very British and dare I suggest Aussie expression?], THE best singer this island of ours has EVER produced irrespective of gender, probably the best singer we WILL ever produce). Do you know what? I suspect she may be one of the best singers this WORLD has ever seen (she IS even better then BS!!!!!!! BUT I didn't say that..certainly not at £100 each for the cheapest ticket.....I'm not sure I'd even pay £100 to SLEEP with Barbra Streisand [those NAILS]......mind you, if I'm paying £200 for 2 tickets for lousy seats why NOT I ask myself???!!!!). Anyway, back to OUR girl. Can you tell I love the woman? I love her voice. I love her strength as a human being. My god did she have problems..I'm sure she WAS an absolute barsteward to those who loved her dearly and worse to those who didn't....but she, like the rest of us....a human being tried her best, achieved so much more than the rest of us, overcame more than the rest of us will ever be confronted with..so on and so forth.
Talk about Dusty, talk about yourself, talk about anything........let's have fun here, let's share our experiences of Dusty, our lives.....
Dusty Springfield, Mary O'Brien....this is YOUR site, our dedication to you......we all love you for whatever reason, it ain't only for your music, is it Woman?......
Members of The Dusty Springfield Network....let's be having you. Get those rears of yours into gear.

I regularly bemoan this fact. Not just that she's gone, but because I was born way too late. I wish I was born 30 years earlier so I could have discovered her talent with the rest of her fans.
I've got stuff to do, but I'll post more later.

Linda
This is EXACTLY why we are here Linda. We can't give you what we experienced first hand BUT we can share whatever is ours to share, simple as that.....your generation dare I say, has so much to offer as well you know.....irrespective of age, irrespective of generation, we have something to give...if only we would all learn from eachothers experiences. I do declare I've swallowed a philosophy text today....that's what comes of studying an arty farty type course in the middle years of life......look at this photo though, I'm not THAT ancient...I am the one on the right...the one on the left is light years younger than me in terms of life's vision (NOT in years it has to be said )......I have learnt SO much from this woman...

Yup, so far so good. I can't believe how much I've already learned and discovered, just by reading and posting questions, etc. (You know those kinds of questions that, if I were to ask anyone else, they'd look at me as if I had three heads? People in my 'real life' don't want to find out what's going on in the background of "Don't You Know", or which songs she recorded in the loo... ).

Well, for one thing, I've learned how to use a computer when the sun is shining on the monitor!
But seriously I know what you mean. And I agree that we all have the opportunity to learn from people of all ages. Life is fluid, we're all learning. (Or so I hope!)
So if this thread is supposed to be our personal essays on why we love Dusty, here's my take (even though I don't have anything to say that hasn't already been said): Dusty is the best singer in recording history. She could sing anything and make it real. She knew what she wanted and didn't stop until she achieved it. And she was doing things, musically, that were unheard of and unexpected. (That's why I wish I was there when it was happening!) So the music reeled me in. But not only was the music riveting, so was her look, her image. Photo after photo, looking so charming and, uh, put together. Her look, not just in the early years but all throughout her career, she had a dynamite look. But the thing that gets me all the time is watching her in videos, interviews etc., where her personality speaks for her. Good god, seeing her on stage and interviews and so on, that pushed me from to . (Can't put it in words, lol). Not only was she talented in the studio, but she had such a stage presence; a real gift for entertaining. There are certain clips, even just a few seconds, where she'll do something that makes me weak in the knees. The RAH dvd has several of those "gotta rewind that!" moments. Music aside, I love hearing stories about how kind she was to people and animals. But perhaps to me the most impressive quality about Dusty 'the person' is how courageous she was to choose sobriety. Not an easy undertaking, but she did it.
OK, that's my Dusty gush of the day. Someone else's turn now.

Linda, I so know what you mean about wishing you were there when it was happening! Gonna have to come back to this cos I need sleep (even though I already slept 13 hours today) But, I love her and always will, I got addicted to her music, something in the way she sings, and seeing her sing live on tapes, and speak.. she has something I relate to I guess

Its a bit of a brainstorming exercise Marg......Dusty topics....what do you want to talk about on the Dusty front?
What I had envisaged was that members would come up with ideas and then start up thread(s) on the appropriate forum(s). Easy peasy.
Obviously, there was always the risk that we would get a little sidetracked but that was Linda's fault, I was merely responding to her post!

Linda, I wasn't into Dusty until recently. In the 60s I was into other music. I've always loved "Dusty in Memphis", but that was it.
But then I read DWD. I lived in Hampstead as a child, then later my mum remarried and moved to Ealing. I know both those neighborhoods. And I came to America at around the same time as Dusty, and suprisingly, had a much better time, even though I'm not famous. I was shocked to find out how horrible she had it here.
I befriended Quentin Crisp in New York (do you want my Quentin Crisp stories?) and he was enthralled with America, just thought it was the cats' meow, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Everyone in America is my friend, he used to say. But then he was outgoing and sociable.
I simply don't understand what America Dusty occupied. Not mine and not Quentin Crisp's, that's for sure. |
