Two more cd's have just hit the shops - both excellent in completely different ways.
Firstly there is 'THE PLATINUM COLLECTION' by Arthur Conley on Atlantic Records. Full to the brim with funky r&b soul, starting with the GREAT 'Sweet soul music' (worth the price of the album all by itself!), we go through all his hits, like 'Funky Street', 'People sure act funny', 'Aunt Dora's love soul shack', 'Hearsay' and more....the 'covers' of well known songs of the era - 'Ob-la-di-Ob-la-da' , 'Shake rattle and roll' etc...the 'soul ballads' such as the truly wonderful 'Take me (just as I am), 'I'm a lonely stranger' and 'Something you got',. The album finishes with the heart-warming 'tribute' to Arthur's mentor - Otis Redding, called 'Otis sleeps on' which is especially sad but beautiful.
An album for 'party people' and lovers of great soul music...AND IT'S LESS THAN A FIVER!!! (Amazon £4.24).
The second album is one of those 'female soul singers - many have not heard of' things (yes ANOTHER one!!)
This time it's Thelma Jones, an artist who was loved by all true soul fans, but who didn't hit the 'big time' saleswise - but an artist who deserved too.
On this album called 'Second chance' we get her complete 60's and 70's recordings. The 60's songs are more soulful - the original recording of 'The house that Jack built' was recorded way before Aretha, 'Never leave me', 'I won't give up my man' are really classy soul ballads, leading up to the song she was most noted for - the truly fabulous 'Salty tears' - a classic song that EVERY soul fan had in their collection.
The seventis saw Thelma going a bit more 'disco', but not in a dross sort of way - more like really good songs with a disco production. Her versions of others 'hits' are outstanding - 'I second that emotion', 'Now that we found love', 'Angel of the morning', 'I'd rather leave while I'm in love' all sound as they are her songs.
Kent Records have done a superb job on the packaging/sleeve notes on this album. A ***** recommendation by Uncle B

All brilliant songs... Thanks Uncle B...

You are the most soulful man I know...
Apart from Arthur Conley, that is...
