I stupidly said to my Mum, that if she and Dad went veggie, I'd quit smoking, and she said "okay then!" But now I've been thinking about it and I do wanna sort of prove to myself that I can do it. My Gran's just quit and she's been smoking for centuries, so I guess it's possible.. Just don't know how long I'd last Not yet though

Well, I wish you the best of luck, Sara.
It won't be easy, but it'll be worthwhile, and you should end up abit richer...
Has anyone got any helpful tips for Sara?...
I think she's gonna need some...

I'm an expert at quitting, I've done it at least a dozen times. But I have no advice, unfortunately... nothing has worked yet. Cigarettes are $10 a pack, you think that'd be motivation, but nope.

I quit once when I was 17 for three weeks. But then I started making myself sick and stuff so I started smoking again and managed to quit that when I turned 18. That's a big reason why I'm scared to quit again

Me too. I have a rotation of vices...
I just remembered that our provincial government is thinking about taking the taxes off quit-smoking products. I think it's a pretty good idea. I know people who have used things like the patch or nicotine gum with success.

If everyone went veggie, pigs would become extinct.
Quitting smoking is one thing, but giving up bacon, sausages, smoked salmon, chicken, lamb chops, steak, hamburgers is quite another - now why would people put themselves through that? We all die, why not just enjoy life?
Vegetarians carry on as if meat were bad for you, but it contains more vitamins and minerals than any other food. Humans are carnivores, that's just the way it is.
A vegetarian friend of mine was feeling tired and went to the doctor. He told her she's anemic and the best thing would be to cook up a steak. So she started eating steak, lost weight, got back her energy. I don't think we're meant to eat rabbit food. |

Sara My friend has been smoking for about 35-40 years. She finally gave up because: She had a dreadfull cough which sent her to the doctor. After an xray, she was told she had a shadow on her lung, and she hated the idea of being preached to about where she was allowed to smoke. The government's smoking ban took the pleasure out of it for her, and she had very expensive dental work and she didn't want to ruin it. So, this combination helped her give up.
Good luck! |

My Mum, who had been a smoker for about 50 years retired at the age of 64, gave up smoking literally overnight. Wham, stopped like that, no patches, nothing, just sheer will power. She gave up because she said that being on a state pension she simply couldn't afford it any more. Sadly she died at the age of 68 from carcinamatosis - one of her cancers was cancer of the lung. It looked like she left kicking the habit a bit too late.

I smoked from 1995 until 2005 - I was a full on 20 a day smoker and never thought I could quit. I never really wanted to, to be honest, and you just CAN'T quit if you don't want to. When I finally did, I went cold turkey - the only way to do it successfully in my opinion. I chucked out all my cigs and everything related to them, lighters, matches, ashtrays, washed all my clothes, bed sheets, sofa covers, etc. It was a combination of things that made me want to rid myself of the habit really, the money I was spending on cigs, the fact that me and my flat constantly STANK of fag smoke, and the fact that I was about to shell out £800 for orthodontic treatment to get my teeth straightened at the age of 24! I didn't want to make a mess of that
There are downsides, I still find myself wanting a cigarette sometimes, usually in social situations where there's alcohol involved, but I think once a smoker always a smoker. I'm just on the wagon. It's like any addiction. I'm pretty smug with myself this week as I've just passed the two year mark since I quit!
Sara you can do it!! When you have quit for a while you will notice that you can run up and down stairs without wheezing, and your sense of smell and taste will become much more sensitive, you'll be able to smell smoke everywhere you couldn't smell it before.
GOOD LUCK |

Good luck in your quest Sara! .....maybe with the money saved from Ciggie's spoil yourself with some chocolate, Cadbury are going to bring back 'Wispa' bars next month I've read, and Cadbury are committed to keeping their product Veggie (I believe that Mars backtracked because of the uproar)
Hope it all goes well!

So why are dogs and cats not extinct? Humans were never meant to be carnivores.. Meat IS bad for you, it sits in your intestines rotting away for ages causing bowel cancer, blocking up all your insides causing heart attacks etc. It's disgusting. Why don't people eat dead bodies raw like carnivorous animals do? Because it has to be cooked and treated to be digested in our systems. Eating a dead body may be the fastest way to get protein and iron and vitamin A and B12, but it's not the only way and it's not necessary for human survival. Maybe at some point in time there were people living in conditions where they had no choice but to kill and eat each other to survive, but that needn't have carried on. It makes me sick that people see others who are different to us as less, and something to be used. Really makes me sick. Yeah, if you're a veggie and you live off chips, of course you're gonna be lacking vitamins, but if you look after yourself properly and eat a balanced diet, there is no need to eat flesh.

Very wise and good advice Rhi, very much how I gave up smoking when I was 22 and no longer a student.
I understand your reluntance after the eating problems you mentioned last time. But it doesn't follow that this will happen again. Its worth giving it another go Sara.
Best of luck We all care about you here and its just 1 day at a time really.
