Dear old Vera Lynn celebrates her 91st birthday today. She is in the 'home' for retired showbiz types. They put on a special meal for her today A 'wartime' menu was produced which made Vera burst into song ... 'Whale meat again'
...the crowed 'de-mobbed' her

OMG... She's nearly as old as me!.. ..
Big respect to Dame Vera... It seems her songs, and singing really helped civilians and The Forces during the war.
I wonder if Amy (Earthbound Gypsy) knows?.. She is a Big Vera Lynn Fan...
Happy Birthday, Dame Vera.

Happy Birthday Dame Vera!.......she certainly lifted the Morale ofthe Allied troops during the War, going abroad and real close to the danger zone to entertain them

You just had to say it didn't you Carole? :). Well.. I love her interpretations of particular songs, for example she has covered 'fool on the hill' and 'a taste of honey' by The Beatles and they are fantastic versions. Her voice is very english and articulate, rather a reflection of the way people 'should' speak. Her voice in short is just so beautiful quite spectacular.
My favourite Vera Lynn songs are; Goodnight Wish me luck ( as you wave me goodbye) Anniversary Waltz The look of love ( yes she did a cover of it :) Fool on the hill A taste of honey A nightingale sang in berkeley square Stars fell on alabama If we only have love We'll meet again Land of hope and glory White cliffs of dover You'd be so nice to come home to Lili Marlene They'll always be an England This is the Army Mr. Jones The Holy city This is my prayer The Village of St.Bernadette It hurts to say goodbye ...........................just to name a few ;)

Vera's later recordings are also great, like Abba's Thank You For The Music, but my all time favourite is a single she did for EMI in the 70's called When (Don't You Remember) and just recently it's been released on cd - she holds the note forever at the end.
There's never been any scandal about Vera, she's always been a very gracious lady! |

Would the cd that when(don't you remember) featured on be the singles collection, and the release date sometime in 2007?. I only say this because I have it, and that's one of the songs on the CD.
Vera belongs to a generation of people who didn't take pride in being 'risque', and also has like you said reputation much grace and is a treasure.

Yes that's the one, the single was originally released in '76. Vera is also great at I Want To Give which was a hit for Perry Como and Let Me Try Again a hit for Frank Sinatra.
Is the picture above a recent one? If so Vera still looks wonderful. It would be great to see some of her old tv shows again, wonder if they have also been "wiped"? |

Not quite as gracious as everyone believes I'n afraid! When my mum was younger she worked in a local shop in town and Vera was a regular customer (I was there on occasion when she came in) and unfortunately more often than not was rude, arrogant and had the all too common "do you know who I am?" attitude that many 'celebrities' had/have and expected to be served immediately before anyone else in the shop! Many of my mum's friends and old colleagues all disliked her immensely.
She lives about 15 minutes drive from me and has done for many, many years!
