This lady has connections to Dusty, in as much Dusty chose 'Wind Beneath My Wings' as one of her funeral songs. Simon Bell sang it.
She is also someone I would describe as a 'one off'.. The Lady is Bette Midler, the song is 'You Don't Own Me'..How d'ya think it stands up to Dustys version?

I like Bette and she is a one off. This is not a bad version, but its not as good as the Dusty version--Dusty's version makes you care about being a free person.

Dear lord Carole - Fancy making me watch 'Wind Beneath My Wings' video first thing on a Friday morning. As if my emotions aren't all over the place already! .
I love that song, I love its poignancy, I love the words, I love the film it was in, I love it because of Simon singing it for Dusty......did I tell you all I love that song?
It will come as no surprise to anybody I'm sure but I really like Bette Midler. She is a one off and I like that. As to her version of 'You Don't Own Me' - its good. It is pure Bette Midler, she has done it her way.
I still think that we tend to be a little too partisan you know when we compare Dusty's version of a song with others - but then you know my feelings on that because I've made them clear on the 'Compare and Contrast' thread

I don't think we are too partisan her versions in the main are just better in my opinion. I think Dusty does a better version of My Colouring Book than Barbra--hey I'm on dangerous ground here and going off topic too.

I've been upset about several things that Bette Middler has said. It seems to me that she finds pleasure in making fun of other people, and I can't get used to that. I was particularly upset when she made fun of Karen Carpenter after she died from complications of anorexia nervosa. Now, in Bette's defense, she did apologize several years later... but I don't appreciate any malicious attitude towards others.
Having said that, I can see that Bette has incredible talent and is also worthy of legendary status in terms of her abilities. I also loved her acting (did anyone see "Ruthless People" where she was married to Danny deVito's character?? LOL!). So yes, Bette is a performer that I respect but don't necessarily admire.

Exactly. That is the main reason why I can't stand her. That and her big head. She just seems to be one of those people who make themselves feel better by putting others down. Not nice people to be around.

Kind of off topic, but Karen and Richard presented Bette with her first Grammy award in 1973, which highly amused her, because she thought they were square.

Now, I wasn't aware that Bette Midler had made those comments.. Don't do much for her as a person.
I've never taken a great deal of interest in her, but loved' Wind Beneath My Wings' for obvious reasons.
I have enjoyed a couple of her films though. Like you, Linda, I thought 'Ruthless People' was hilarious, and 'Beaches' well, that was heart rending.
She seems to have that acting quality that can convincingly either make you laugh or cry.
Good pic of Karen and Richard. How on earth did Bettes head FIT between those two?!... Just joking!..

'From a distance' is my fave Bette song, it flopped in Britain when first released, but became a hit during the Gulf war, I remember Bette's TOTP appearance....a permanent grin, I think she loves an audience!

I used to love Bette's live concert movie Divine Madness. I'll have to check and see if it's on DVD.
