Broadcast on Wednesday 2 January 2002, this interview between Terry Gross (Fresh from WHYY) and Vicki Wickham is an interesting 'listen'. The interview was clearly given in DWD's post publication period. It's about 20 mins in length so its a cup of coffee and biscuit 'activity'. Don't choke on your biscuit though, for gawd's sake!

Thanks for the link Janie.

An interesting interview, and nice that they did
talk about the music and Bacharach & David (you know who to vote for in the Songwriters poll!!!!)as well as the usual subjects.

Cheers Janie.

Paul.

I haven't listened to it yet,but I'm betting VW just had to mention she wrote the lyrics for YDHTSYLM.

She did indeed mention YDHTSYLM!!!

The interview is more balanced than the book as she does talk about music and singing.

I'm not sure about the dates of the self harming though--I would have thought 70's rather than 60's but then VW was never very good with dates.

Not had the chance to listen to it yet.. but why did she have to mention the self harming? I mean, that's not something Dusty would have wanted the world to know about..

Wow, I'm thinking the same way as trek... I didn't think the self-harming hit full-swing until she moved to LA in the early 1970's. However, it's been suggested that she would intentionally hurt herself as a child so that her family would pay attention to her... as though that was the only way to get attention in her home. Sad.

In the book, "Dancing With Demons", Vicki seems to talk about Dusty's cutting quite a bit, unfortunately. I agree, I don't think Dusty would want this to be public information, and that's why I thought it was TMI. When I finished the book, I wasn't sure that Dusty would have endorsed it, even though it's supposedly an "autobiography". On the other hand, I have no doubt that those who are cutters today would benefit from this knowledge... they're not the only ones out there.

So much more is known today about cutting and its all about feeling physical pain to overcome emotional pain--its so sad, but Doctors are more understanding about depression and treat it so much better now.
Hopefully the experiences then will help people who do this today.

DWD contains so many errors and that is really why Lucy O'Brian book whilst not perfect is the better Biography.
Autobiography is certainly the wrong title for DWD!

I think Vicki claimed that it was an 'authorised biography' certainly giving the impression that the book had been okayed by representatives of Dusty's estate..

I'm not sure whether that was AFTER the book was in the shops, OR, BEFORE it was written...

OK well that explains a whole lot. I thought it was rather odd for an authorized bio.

Most people think of an 'authorised biography' as being one given the thumbs up by the subject. When I bought DWD I was under the impression that Dusty herself had authorised its writing. I was surprised at the level of personal detail the book contained as we all knew that Dusty had been so mindful of maintaining her privacy. However, it seemed reasonable that knowing she was so ill she might have felt it appropriate to allow certain aspects of her life to be released into the public domain.

However, as far as DWD was concerned, it seems that 'authorised' means authorised by Dusty's estate - I am tempted to suggest the use of the word in this context is entirely misrepresentative.
