I think it's interesting that Dusty *appeared to* break into show business with relative ease. Maybe it was a sign of the times, that the music and television industries were just beginning to burst into mainstream culture, but I am still surprised how she seemed to pretty much walk into her career with little rejection. For example, her time with the Lana sisters came about simply by responding to an advertisement and setting up an audition. And it's almost like the Springfield's just sneezed and out came a record. Also her role as host of 'Ready Steady Go' seemed to be handed to her without much ado. I have no doubt that Dusty worked hard to present herself with excellence, but I can't seem to find out much about any rejection that she might have experienced as she tried to break into the business.

Does anyone know, in her pre-celebrity years , did she struggle professionally and experience rejection, or was she just such an obvious talent that record/tv producers saw her potential immediately? And, if she didn't have to face professional rejection, would that have affected her self-confidence and perfectionism throughout her career? It seems to me that instant success and popularity would put anyone under tremendous pressure to live up to everyone's expectations, and even question their own talent versus luck.

This sounds like a question for Douggie.

Well first of all, I think you ask a very a very interesting question, Linda.

I've actually thought a similar thing myself.

I will ask Douggie, who used to be the bass player in Dusty's backing group, the Echoes, who might just be able to throw some light on your question.

You may be interested in this quote from the book, 'Scissors and Paste' by David Evans:

'I am hypnotised, as the fickle finger of fate hovers, quivers and finally selects the successful candidate from an arsenal of potential stars.
After all, it needn't have been Dusty who was singled out...it could have been Brenda Biggs who changed her name and walked off with the prize.Or Mabel Miller or Doreen Denton...'

My own opinion is, that in those days there wasn't as much competition for singers(No Pop Idol or X factor!)...

Dusty DID live in the hub of it all, London, which would have been a huge benefit.

It would have been much harder had she come from the North of the country.
I mean Cilla only became a star because she used to take the coats at The Cavern in Liverpool, and The Beatles knew her...FATE ya see!..

Anyhow, I'll post your question on Douggies own thread (General Forum)which is dedicated for him to answer any questions from DSN

Thanks Carole! I'd never seen that video clip before... I appreciate the post.

The reason I was even interested in her entry into showbiz is because I would presume the 'journey' into success would have to affect her psyche, her perception of herself, and her ability to recognize her work as her own achievement rather than someone else's creation. Am I making sense? Anyhow, it's not really that important... I just like to know what makes people tick.
