So, I've seen footage of Dusty behind the guitar, as well as photos. Well, what's the story behind the guitar? I'd be interested to find out how and when she learned how to play, and how it came to be that she even picked one up. It seems to me that the guitar was rather insignificant in the context of her career. (Am I wrong?) Also, I've seen photos of Dusty with Norma on the drums. Did they just make their own music for the fun of it?

I guess, what I'm really getting at is, we all know Dusty as the vocalist, but I'm also curious about Dusty as a musician. Was the guitar important to her? I am under the impression that her singing and performing was the most important aspect of her passion for music, and the guitar was simply 'something to do' while she sang.

Hi Linda.

Interesting question. I don't know the specifics of when or how she came to learn to play guitar, but I've read (I can't remember where)that Dusty played in clubs prior to the Springfields and Lana Sisters, and she would accompany herself with a guitar.

I think Dusty was much more musical than the general public got to know, but in the 60's I get the feeling that there were restictions on what a female singer could 'get a way with' if she wanted to be successful star.

I'm sure those who were close to Dusty knew the true extent of her musical talent, but what we saw was mainly the Singing Star.

Paul.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Paul. I had thought the same as you. Most artists of the day who carried their guitar on stage tended to be men, or so it seems to me.

I have the feeling if I keep it up on this forum, I'll get that reply a lot. Ok, off to Douggie.

I also thought she didn't, but I play the guitar and I can't read music to save my life. As long as the written chords are provided I'm fine.
