As for "feminism" today, I don't feel that I have anything to prove personally as a woman, but that's probably because I've got a couple of university degrees and a whole string of letters behind my name that give the illusion that I'm "important" or something rediculous like that. It broke my heart, though, when I was working as a social worker at the Big Sisters association (do you have that in the UK?) and most of the girls on my caseload aspired to become pregnant in their teens so they could "do something" with their lives. Very sad. However, perhaps the issue isn't so much sexism as it is economic discrimination. The young ladies (ages 6-16) were living far below the poverty line and had limited opportunities in life.

On the other hand, I truly believe that what I see at the Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association (local eating disorder treatment facility ~ I'm the prez) is a glaring statement of the lack of REAL progress (as opposed to perceived progress) insofar as most women who begin dieting and take it too far reportedly do so because of societal pressures to look good. Many women still believe that success and good looks are interchangeable. Beauty, not wisdom/intelligence defines success for many women, at least in their mind's eye. This is just one example of how entrenched women are, 30-40 years after "Wishin' and Hopin'", in the same mindset, albeit more subtle.

As for the Hal David brain-fart songs, I wonder if he wrote for a few too many musicals. Putrid lyrics are more acceptable on broadway, I think, because the character can plead stupidity. Hmm...

Off my soapbox now...

Warten Und Hoffen Lyrics:
(bacharach / david / german lyrics : unknown)

Warten und hoffen
Und hoffen und warten
Sehnen und träumen
Tag aus und tag ein
Denn einmal ist jeder allein

Waiting and hoping
And hoping and waiting.
Longing and dreaming
Day in and day out.
Then once everybody will be alone

Das glück ist überall
Weit und nah
Darum muss du immer
Warten und hoffen und träumen
Auf einmal ist es da

Luck is everywhere
Far away and near
That’s why you always have to
Wait and hope and dream
And once it will be there

And if you ask the wind and the sea
Tell me when, when does it comes
Then the wind and the sea will say, oohhh

Du muss warten, warten und auch hoffen
Hoffen und auch träumen

You have to wait, wait and also hope
Hope and also dream

Nur warten und hoffen
Und hoffen und warten
Sehnen und träumen
Tag aus und tag ein
Dann bist du bald nicht mehr allein

Just waiting and hoping
And hoping and waiting
Longing and dreaming
Day out and day in
Then soon you won’t be alone anymore

Dann wird die zukunft schön
Jahr aus, jahr ein
Then the future will be beautiful
Year out, year in.

Und dann musst du nicht mehr warten
Und hoffen und hoffen und warten
Und auch nicht mehr träumen
Ohh nein, das glück ist dein

And then you musn’t wait anymore
And hope and hope and wait
And also not dream anymore
Ohh no, luck is yours

Then you tell the sea and the wind
And everyone that are still lonely
That one day luck will begin, ooohh

Muss nur warten, warten und auch hoffen
Hoffen und auch träumen

Just wait, wait and also hope
Hope and also dream

Just wait and hope and hope and wait.
Longing and dreaming.
Day out and day in
Then soon you won’t be alone anymore

Dann wird die zukunft schön
Jahr aus, jahr ein.

Then the future will be beautiful
Year out, year in

Und dann musst du nicht mehr warten
Und hoffen und hoffen und warten
Und auch nicht mehr träumen
Oh nein, dass glück ist dein

And then you don’t have to wait anymore
And hope and hope and wait
And also not dream anymore
Oh no, luck is yours.

I warten und hoffen und hoffen und warten that I could read that without cracking up.

Wow, how interesting that the English that's translated in there isn't what was released in English. I like this one better.

..and here's the Italian version:

Stupido Stupido Lyrics:(bacharach / david / cassia)

Stupido, stupido perch? fai cos? tutte le volte che io dico no
Non voglio venire a bailar
Mi piace un altro che non fa
Come lo stupido, stupido, stupido cos? come te

Stupid, stupid why do you behave like that
Every time I say no?
I don’t want to come and dance
I like another boy who doesn’t act
Stupid, stupid, stupid like you

He’s not goodlooking but I love him
Do you know why? he understands me
And he knows how to talk about love
But you don’t, no, you’ll never know
Because you’re just stupid, more and more stupid
I don’t want to listen to what you say
Only he can make me dream
In his arms I feel that
He’s not stupid, stupid, stupid because
Because he makes me tremble, tremble with love

Tremar d’amor
Tremar d’amor

He’s not goodlooking but I love him
Do you know why? he understands me
And he knows how to talk about love
But you don’t, no, you’ll never know
Because you’re just stupid, more and more stupid
I don’t want to listen to what you say
Only he can make me dream
In his arms I feel that
He’s not stupid, stupid, stupid because
Because he makes me tremble, tremble with love
Tremble with love
Tremble with love

I think I plead ignorance. I would love to hear Dusty sing in either of these languages. lol

Anything but the English version... lol.... He's not goodlooking but I love him??? I love it.... lol

Life is sweet. Give me some foreign love.... lol

How very interesting that the translations shout out about the ignorance of love. Hmmm. Ironic, or not??

Linda makes a good point about feminism, but feminism is the least of our problems. Can't free a woman if she likes it barefoot and pregnant. Can't change things until husbands cook and clean as well.

I've been living in America since 1974 and I've seen alarming changes, especially since the dicey election of 2000. This country is headed full steam towards fascism.

It's not that women are oppressed, all Americans (except the rich) are oppressed and they like it. It's not feminism we need, it's humanism.

I don't know if it's any better in Britain - the suffocating corporate mindset seems to be sweeping the world.

Agreed about the opression of Americans, and the election, lol. I lived in the States for two years and was shocked at how the Canadian philosophical and social climate is so extremely different. We have similar cultural trends (i.e. entertainment industry, material things) but the social climate is different. Although I did cry when our current prime minister was elected. But it's a minority government so his hands are pretty tied, thankfully.

Heavy stuff. lol. Don't get me started, I have strong opinions about politics and social justice, and if I say what I think, I'm bound to offend people. So that's all I'm going to say on that!

So anyhow, a little birdie just sent me the German version of "Wishin' and Hopin'" (oh yeah, that's what this thread is about!) and I just about died laughing when my son peered around the table and said, "What happened to SQUEEZING??". He's four years old and pretty perceptive, musically. I could see the confusion on his face. lol
