I didn't see it, but I do agree, that it looks fantastic...

It was on TV in England a while ago in fact I have part of it on video tape.For some reason some of it got taped over.
I'll look it out and give more info later.
Dusty is the narrator but does not perform.

I remember looking at this when it was broadcast on BBC around Christmas '96/'97. I think it was made on the back of re-awakened interest in Bacharach in the mid-90's especially after Oasis featured a photo of Burt on the cover on one of their lp's.
As far as I remember, Dusty's narration wasn't really very extensive, and there are only a couple of clips of Dusty (singing "A House is Not A Home" from "Another Evening With Burt Bacharach" and miming to "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" from "The Bacharach Sound"), and the only thing I remember Dusty saying is "Who wouldn't want to sing a song like that", after the clip of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself".
I don't think it has ever been commercially available. It was interesting to hear Burt Bacharach talk about his life and work.
I also remember Noel Gallagher (of Oasis)saying that their song "half The World Away" (used as the theme to the sit-com "The Royle Family") is just "This Guy's In Love With You" with the chords played in reverse - and it still sounds exactly like "This Guy's in Love With You".

Dusty comes in quite a few times during this programme.These are the words she says during the recording I have.
"Burt is back, not that he ever went away. Now he is being re-discovered by a new generation".
"The Look Of Love was written for Casino Royale and gave me one of my biggest hits".
"He was still unsure in the early days of the direction his life would take and after the army he drifted into a career in music, working as an arranger and conductor for Vic Damone and Steve Lawence.
Success as a songwriter soon took him away from live shows, but he did return for a special performer-Marlene Ditrich."
After a clip of IJDKWTDWM Dusty says
"Who would'nt want to sing a song like that. Here at last was a writer changing dramatically how pop music sounded, no wonder we all wanted to sing them."
"Close To You launched the Carpenters career.
1970 was a good year for Burt, he wrote Raindrops keep Falling on my Head and the score for Butch Cassidy as well as Close To You and he won 2 Oscars and he scored a success with his first broadway musical Promises, Promises."
"But after the success of 1970 it would be more than 10 years before he had a new song get to number 1.
Burt was soon to split not only from his wife Angie Dickenson, but also from Hal David and Dionne ."
"Written for the film Nightshift Thats What Friends Are For was later released as a single for Aids research and went on to reunit Burt and Dionne after a decade apart. It went on to win a Grammy."
These quotes are spread throughout the programme with Burt talking about his life and career.

Wow, thanks for the info! I have an A&E documentary DVD set that includes bios of Burt, Dionne, & the Brill Building, among others. It's fantastic, but never mentions Dusty. I love Dusty's speaking voice, but unfortunately, zip. lol
I wondered the same about Dusty's thoughts on the Carpenters, Sara. I've heard several comments from both Karen and Richard about their admiration of Dusty but the only comment I've heard from Dusty is a brief line about her contribution to Richard's solo album. I'll dig it up for you and post what she said.

Entertainment Tonight segment, 1987
In the 1970’s the Carpenters dominated the airwaves with 16 consecutive top 20 hits. Ten gold singles, eight gold albums and an academy award for best song. But success brought trouble and tragedy to the popular brother-sister team. After Karen’s short-lived marriage failed, the normally vibrant singer became depressed. In early 1983, Karen Carpenter died of a heart attack after a long struggle with anorexia nervosa. She was just 32. The death of the quintessential girl next door was a great shock, but it affected none so deeply as her brother and musical partner, Richard, and after four years he is just putting the finishing touches on his first album without Karen, due out in August.
The death of Karen was devastating, and even though Richard’s career is on track again, the memories of his sister are never far away.
Richard: I think about Karen’s loss, which was tragic, and to me, senseless. It’s something I think about every time I walk into a studio.
Interviewer: What do you do to fill the void that Karen brought to the recordings?
Richard: Well, in a sense, that can’t be totally filled. We have to go in another direction. The bulk of the leads I’m taking care of on this project. I produced it, orchestrated it, arranged it, co-wrote nine of the eleven pieces. Then we have one instrumental, and two guest female leads. One is Dionne Warwick, I’m happy to say, and the other is another big fave of mine, Dusty Springfield. <cut to a smokin’ hot Dusty singing behind a microphone wearing a black outfit and big hair, lol>
Interviewer to Dusty: You’re aware of the fact that you’re stepping into a spot that Karen filled. What do you go through, what are you thinking about?
Dusty: I was nervous, I thought there’s no way that I could do it as well as Karen did. And then I thought, that’s probably not what he wants anyway. I mean, otherwise he wouldn’t have asked me, and he wouldn’t have asked Dionne.
Richard: They have the talent, and they also have what is very important to me and that’s a commitment to their craft.
For nearly two decades, Richard has experienced the very highest of highs and lowest of lows. And while the magic he made with Karen is going to be a tough act to follow, he’s determined to keep making his music for a long time to come.
Richard: This is really what I do. This is my life, and I didn’t want to retire, and certainly the company didn’t want me to. It’s been said, it’s a platitude, a hundred times already, ‘life goes on’, and it’s absolutely true. So I wanted to get back in and start.

| i have the Bacharach special on tape and to be honest she does not say much its good though. oh and on youtube there was a carpenters clip which features a sketch with dusty. |
