Ev'rything's coming up Dusty!! It came in the mail today. My virgin ears are beyond delighted!!! The first track I went to was "I had a talk with my man last night" because Simon cited it as his favourite in the RAH interview, and then I started at the beginning and just sat there and listened to everything, track by track. (Incidentally, I think 'listening to music' is a lost art... do people do that as a pass-time anymore? I do.)
Anyhow, I had a few questions. First of all, I wasn't impressed with the liner notes. I don't need to be told how awesome Dusty is, what I want to read is who wrote the song, who did the backing vocals, and any other technical trivia that might be interesting. I thought that was lacking, not just in this CD cover, but with all of Dusty's CDs that I have. Were the liner notes on the initial release more informative, or did the record label just assume people don't want to know the details of the backing vocals, etc?
Another question: What songs from this album were released as singles? Or were the singles released between albums? I was surprised with the overall track list, based on the information that I had regarding her success with songs like "Stay Awhile" and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me"... did they appear on later albums (not compilation albums, just regular releases)??
Third, (it's not a question, just a comment), as soon as I heard "Doodlin'" I liked it immediately. Few songs impress me immediately... but this one did. Did she ever perform this song in public? It's wonderful.

I think its true to say that singles were not often released from Albums in the 60's. It was possible to buy an album with no singles on it.I think some of these would have made good singles. I don't think that backing singers were listed on the original album. As to who wrote the songs --the writers are listed on the CD itself. As to the backing singers--Paul Howes in his book lists them as Madeline Bell, Doris Troy and Dusty herself. This album remains my favourite Dusty LP.

I remember when it first came out...it was the most EXPENSIVE album at the time (37/6d)..at a time when most albums were 29/11d...but it was SO worth it - lavish sleeve, pictures and all. Didn't Tony Hall (from Record Mirror) write the sleeve notes?...I know he gave it a brilliant review in Record Mirror at the time, but then so did Penny Valentine in 'Disc & Music Echo', the Melody Maker and the NME (New Musical Express)...in fact EVERY critic liked it!! At the time Phillips used blue or black for their labels, but this one was in red (the first time ever for a Phillips release). There was extensive advertising in all the music papers, and I believe it was the most expensive advertising campaign ever mounted by a British record label at that time. The quality would have sold it...but I suppose the advertising really helped. It certainly was one of Dusty's biggest selling albums.

Yes, I know but I don't like the presentation of it. I like quick reference, not essay.
Thanks for the replies. I love this album! Words can't express.

My very fave album too, Linda...
There aint a dud song amongst them..
I go thru phases of liking different tracks...and playing them alot.
I think her version of 'Who Can I turn to? is heartbreaking.
The whole album is quality...
I think the consensus has been that 'I Had A Talk' just takes it as the best performance, but only just.
'I've Been Wrong Before' was released here as a single by Cilla Black, but I don't need to tell you WHO had the best version..
If I had to choose between this album and 'Memphis' I'd choose this one every time..No Contest.
