I've moved the following from the Newbie thread - Poesy has raised an interesting question here folks......could be a good debate in the offing methinks!

So right Mark, we never can tell just what is round the corner . As far as our schooldays go, teachers were far more strict back then , discipline is something they need to address in schools today, but without being OTT. What is your view ?

I think political correctness has pretty much diluted any form of real discipline.Teachers find themselves between a rock and a hard place... We had the cane as punishment in my schooldays of the late 1970's.These days, just the "threat" of using one may lead to litigation.Bloody ridiculous!

To my mind the whole world's gone crazy with 'political correctness' No one seems to have any respect anymore. Children appear to be out of control, with most parents not giving a damn. Manners are few and far between. There are far too many 'do gooders' around - challenging anything that's sensible and has worked for years. You 'cannot do this - cannot do that' is now the norm. I long for the days when people said 'please' or 'thank you', children WERE children and politicians were politicians because they believed they could do well, and not because they wanted huge amounts of money and directorships to private companies. Let's get back to clipping kids round the ear when they do wrong, the cane at school and parents who are responsible for their actions - listening to the older generation and LEARNING from them.

They still had the cane in the 70's? When did it become illegal? I agree that kids are getting worse and worse, every generation When I was at school, which was probably the generation before now, it was bad but nowhere near as bad as it is now. But I still think the cane and physical punishment is wrong. Smacking a child is an adult taking out their anger on the kid, and if it were to become legal, some people would take advantage.. leading to child abuse. Parents need to be taught how to discipline their kids without violence from an early age, I've seen so many parents who just don't care, letting their kids get away with anything. And these are the same kind of people who smack their kids later on when they're out of control... And this doesn't work, it only teaches violence to the kids.

The cane was banned in 1987, Sara, when you and I were already in school! |

I thought it was banned in the 50's or 60's or something! I don't remember anyone being sent to get whacked!

I went to a private school and we had THE STRAP which was made of leather and really cracked hard on the palm of the hand. That was as recent as 1989.
In my opinion, the bratty children of today (my kids won't fit into that category) haven't been taught how to respect themselves, others, or material things. I really think we can't underestimate the role that material wealth has played in the breakdown of children's behaviour. The last few decades, it seems as though parents are substituting STUFF for TIME AND ATTENTION. That's a sure way to screw a kid up and send all kinds of misguided messages.

Geez, Teda! Whatever did you do to warrant that?!
That is the kind of incident that turns off so many people who went to Catholic school back in the day. So many folks (including my own father) refuse to let their kids have anything to do with the church because of what the nuns and priests got away with then. Sad
I enjoyed being an instructor when I was in the Navy, but of course I had military discipline on my side. No one in their right mind would give a Chief Petty Officer any grief, because they knew that they would be responsible for their actions.
Unfortunately, teachers in the civilian world don't have the authority as they used to. And because of all the reasons that everyone has mentioned so far, most of the people I know who are teachers in the public school system here HATE their jobs. They spend class time waking kids up, keeping them off their cel phones, trying to teach kids who just want to find the easiest way to get through the class instead of learning anything. And getting any parent involvement is rare - unless they are there to complain about how their children are being "wronged".
Not only wouldn't I want to be a teacher in public schools today, I sure wouldn't want to be a student either.

When I was in Infants/Junior school they used to use the ruler on the hands if you were naughty. The headmistress also had a habit of yanking the boys trousers down and slapping the bare bum in front of the rest of the class!! (1950's this was)
When my husband was in the 6th form he got the cane! Don't ask.

I hate undeserved authority and I always will! Give the authority to good teachers and they will make the best out of it. But nothing is worse than being terrorised by a teacher who doesn't know ANYTHING about the subject!
If you ask me - the quality of the teachers has gone down the drain as well... (at least where I come from)... And yes - pupils are scum these days. Last weekend a teacher told me that they now even masturbate in their lessons! Nice...

Knowing how liberal we've become I suspect it might be part of the National Curriculum!

I think the key elements here are common sense, respect and accountability.Of course no-one wants to see kids being unnecessarily punished for trivial things... but neither should good, decent teachers be subject to the crap these unruly brats dish out.

Oh, just shut up, Brian.
I'll expose my ignorance now. What the hell is caning, anyways? I've had the strap, a kick in the ass or two, and ear pulling.... lots of it. And suspensions (fun) but no caning. Someone fill me in.
Janie I can't believe they would expose boy's backsides!
