I heard Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music" on the radio this morning and realized that everyone mentioned in this song is no longer with us, except for Sam Moore.
So, which one is your favourite performer, of those mentioned? They're all fantastic, but I really have a soft spot for James Brown. He was amazing on stage until the very end.
Do you like good music (yeah yeah) That sweet soul music (yeah yeah) Just as long as it's swingin' (yeah yeah) Oh yeah, oh yeah
We're out here on the floor, y'all, (yeah yeah) Ah, going to a go-go (yeah yeah) Dancin' with the music (yeah yeah) Oh yeah, oh yeah
Spotlight on Lou Rawls, y'all (yeah yeah) Ah, don't he look tall, y'all (yeah yeah) Singin' "Love's a Hurtin' Thing", y'all (yeah yeah) Oh yeah, oh yeah
Spotlight on Sam & Dave, y'all (yeah yeah) Ah, don't they look great, y'all (yeah yeah) Singin' "Hold On! I'm Comin'" (yeah yeah) Oh yeah, oh yeah
Spotlight on Wilson Pickett (yeah yeah) That wicked-picked Pickett (yeah yeah) Singin' "Mustang Sally" (yeah yeah) Oh yeah, oh yeah
Spotlight on Otis Redding now (yeah yeah) Singin' "Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa (yeah yeah) Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa" (yeah yeah) Oh yeah, oh yeah
(Instrumental Bridge)
Spotlight on James Brown, y'all (yeah yeah) He's the king of them all, y'all (yeah yeah) He's the king of them all, y'all (yeah yeah) Oh yeah, oh yeah
Do you like good music (yeah yeah) That sweet soul music (yeah yeah) Just as long as it's swingin' (yeah yeah) Oh yeah, oh yeah
I got to get the feelin' (yeah yeah) I got to get the feelin' (yeah yeah) Do you like good music (yeah yeah) That sweet soul music (yeah yeah) The King gets the feelin' (yeah yeah) I want to get the feelin' (yeah yeah) Otis Redding got the feelin' (yeah yeah)

This really was THE song for soul lovers - less than 3 minutes of pure ENERGY - fantastic for dancers the world over. ALL the artists mentioned were worthy for different reasons - Lou Rawls for his super-velvet voice, Sam & Dave for raw 'sock-it-to-me' soul, Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding who the term 'soul music' was invented, but once again it was James Brown who was the KING - he could sing anything, and had 'the groove'...the showman of showmen - he just knew how to light your fuse.

Yeah, yeah, Linda.... Great Song...I LOVE it!..
Well my big spotlight would go on Otis Redding..'My Girl' and 'Dock Of The Bay' are two of my all-time faves.
He would be followed by Wilson Pickett and his fabulous 'Midnight Hour'..yeah yeah....

Rod Stewart tried singing this song, but it was a poor imitation of the great Arthur Conley original.

I tried, but I never could get into Rod Stewart's music. And I know he's insanely popular and iconic and everything.... I just can't do it.
