Do you mean a record Carole? Or CD single? I wouldnt buy a record single if they started producing them again, because of how easy they used to get scratched and I hated listening to ep and lp's with scratches on. As for CD singles - it makes more sense to buy the album. Last downloaded tunes were Amy Winehouses.

Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow.
Just walk beside me and be my friend.

A record or a cd single..

What was the last one you either bought or downloaded?..

I know what you mean about vinyls, Lynn..
It didn't take much for them to get spoiled, in some way or other.

As this thread is going down like a punctured tyre, I'm gonna change it to:

What was the last vinyl single you ever bought, if you can remember,AND what was the FIRST vinyl single you ever bought, if you can remember!

If you're in the right place at the right time, you can get singles for free these days.

I know this makes me sound young, but the first 45's I ever bought were "We Are The World", and the Canadian counterpart "Tears are Not Enough". I think this was also about the same time as Dionne Warwick & Friends releasing "That's What Friends Are For". By that time I had accumulated a few singles, but my memory is hazy. You can probably tell by my list that I bought singles because of the underlying social causes, and not so much because of their pop music status.

I've never been much of a 'singles' buyer. I've learned that the real gems are the hidden album tracks that nobody really talks about... the ones that never get aired.

I used to really love buying singles.

The big decision was WHICH single track I would buy with my hard earned cash.

From memory, I think I bought one each week (but it couldda been month)

In those days there were SO many tracks I liked, and they were released on a regular basis.

When I started to get abit 'richer' I would buy a vinyl LP..they always LOOKED so nice, and they very rarely included any pre-released single tracks.

Then things changed..and they started to release singles, more as a 'taster' to an album.

I would find myself buying an album JUST for the single/s on it.

So I would skip thru' most of the tracks until I found my favourite.

I can't tell you the number of albums I've got, where I've only listened to a couple of tracks, and never persevered with the rest.

This led me to start buying compilation albums, because, I knew ALL the tracks ...

This week I heard that HMV are going thru a bad time.

Won't it be a shame if all those treasure troves of 'Record Shops' bite the dust completely?

Carole, I think you described the trends of most people. The way people shop for music is so different now, compared to even five years ago. I haven't walked into a music store in the longest time, but I buy music regularly. I don't pay for downloads, I still prefer CDs. I can't get used to the idea of buying music that's not even touchable, if that makes sense. I think I've had a few rants about that one already.

The upside is that I've been able to find several indie artists with amazing talent. And another upside is that I don't even care what's going on musically on the charts, because I have my own hot 100 list.

The first single I ever bought was "She Loves You" by The Beatles. It was the first record I ever bought, period.

Oh! I almost totally forgot about these singles I bought in April at a record sale in Chiswick:

"IOWTBWY" backed with "Once Upon A Time"

"In the Middle of Nowhere" backed with "Baby, Don't You Know"

"YDHTSYLM" backed with "Every Ounce of Strength"

"Melting Pot" by Blue Mink

along with 2 LP's: "Dusty Greatest Hits" and "Dancin' In the Street" - Martha and the Vandellas.

At the Oxfam shop in Soho, I purchased a single "Two Hit Songs from West Side Story" - "I Feel Pretty" - Julie Andrews and "Maria" - Johnny Mathis (I also bought a Doris Day single for Simon)

...and at the Oxfam shop in Henley - "Arrested by You"
