TWO of the very best Soul Singers ever, coincidentally, were both taken from us by shootings.
In totally different circumstances, it has to be said..
However I really think that Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye are two very worthy 'soul men' and both are up for discussion on this thread.
Starting with; Which one did/do you prefer, and why?

Carole - you can be cruel at times! They are (were) both fantastic. Sam Cooke made some outstanding records in his relatively short career - 'A change is gonna come' is most probably one of the top 5 male soul vocals ever. Add to this 'Only sixteen', 'You send me', 'Chain Gang', 'Wonderful world', 'Another Saturday night' - all superb. Any artist would have LOVED just one of these songs to establish their career, and a place in pop history. Marvin was and still is the sexiest male singer ever. I prefer his earlier recordings when he was 'raw' - 'Ain't that peculiar', 'I'll be doggone', 'Try it baby', 'Stubborn kind of fella', 'Hitch hike', 'I heard it through the grapevine', 'Too busy thinking about my baby' - the 'duets' with Kim Weston, Mary Wells , Tammi Terrell and later Diana Ross. 'Let's get it on' is THE BEDROOM song - Mary Whitehouse would turn into a 'nympho' on hearing this - God help Mr W if she'd bought 'Sexual healing'!! So on balance I think the vote goes to Marvin, but Sam was certainly ruffling the duvet

Another difficult choice!
Marvin Gaye gets my vote. I mean, Brian summed it up nicely, but Marvin is my choice if only because I am more familiar with his story. That's a cop-out, I know. Both men were AMAZING!

Love them both, but gotta say Marvin I love his earlier stuff more too, more than the 70's stuff.

They are two different generations of Soul Men. I like both. Sam set the stage for the "Marvins" to come.

I'm glad this is not a poll! Both are essential and i would find it hard to favour on over another. That said, Sam's the one!

So difficult. Both equally.
I think as usual Brian sums them both up very well. I find it impossible to choose.

Well if I had known that fence-sitting was an option, I'd have taken that one.

I prefer Sam Cooke. A Change is Gonna Come can bring a tear to my eye (on a bad day)!
What's Going On by Marvin Gaye sounds amazing if you play it really LOUD. |
