Dusty recorded quite a few cover versions of various songs.
Amongst them are TWO which I have never been impressed by and would like to discuss.
The First is 'You Gotta A Friend' In my opinion Dusty's version comes second to the James Taylor original.
The Second is 'Make it With You' originally recorded by David Gates and Bread. In my opinion Dusty's version comes a poor second to the original.
Dusty sings these two songs at a very slow pace, and I find myself losing interest in the lyrics, as she sings them.
Is it me?...
What do you think?

I like Dusty's version of 'You've got a friend', but not quite as much as the ORIGINAL Carole King recording (James Taylor 'covered' it also Carole ). 'Make it with you' I'm not keen on by anyone - too 'sugary and sweet' for me.

I agree with you on both songs, Carole. These two songs get the FF treatment if I am listening to a CD in the car. They have earned Elevator Music status in my opinion.

I'm not crazy about "Make It With You". "You Got a Friend" is a good song, I can't help but like it.
Don't throw tomatoes at me or anything, but I really don't care for "This Girl's in Love With You". Perhaps it's because I just like Herb Alpert's version.

Another song on my Elevator Music list. And Herb is another fine musician who should eschew the urge to sing.

LOL For the most part he did. His records were really bizarre. I can't think of anyone to even compare him to.

Poor Sara, this thread is traumatizing you, isn't it?
OK, well I liked "Sunny" and "24 Hours From Tulsa" the first time I heard them.

I didn't say that I didn't like the songs, You've Got A Friend, and 'Make It With You'
I'm just not keen on Dusty's version of them.
They could be on an album called 'Songs to nod off to'...
A great cure for insomniacs.
(I know I'm going OTT, but its fun, aint it?)...

Did you prefer the 'take' on those two songs to the originals, Linda?..

You've got a friend by James Taylor is the best version for me, Dusty's version comes second. The original by Carole King is okay but I have to admit to not really liking the singing Carole King--she is a great writer but in my opinion not a very good singer.
Make it with you--I prefer David Gates and Bread, but I've never really been a Bread fan. Dusty's version is okay but certainly not one of my fav covers of hers.
24 hours from Tulsa as its been mentioned--I do prefer Dusty's version.

It's hard to judge for "Sunny". For one thing, I know of several versions. I don't really have a preference.... but Dusty's version is lovely.
I give Dusty's version of "24 Hours from Tulsa" a 2-thumbs up as the best version. Not only did she cut an amazing track vocally, but I love the fact that this song was tackled by a woman, given the lyrics. It adds more depth than Gene Pitney's version for that reason, in my opinion.

I prefer Bobby Hepp's version of 'Sunny' to Dusty's.
Re Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa.
I give equal bouquets to Dusty and Gene Pitney.
However it is quite unusual to hear a female singing a song in which Sheis the pro-active person. The lyrics empower the woman for a change.

Talk about 'Dusty Covers', I think she's wearing the settee covers on the 'Knowing When To Leave' video!

I've always loved Dusty's "Make it With You" - her vocal is superb.
I'm not keen on anyone's version of "You've Got A Friend" - a bit too maudlin for me.
Shame on you Sara for not liking "Spooky"

Blimey, seems to me there may well be scope here for resurrecting my 'Compare and Contrast' thread - i.e. A Dusty version of a song versus another 'cover' .
