I was wondering how this song was initially introduced to Dusty. Did she stumble across it or did someone bring it to her attention? Who wrote it? Did she like it immediately? It seems to be one of those anthem-like songs, and timeless too... it can't be pinpointed to a particular decade as a lot of her work can.
No, my Paul Howes book hasn't been shipped yet.

It was written by Bruce Roberts and Carole Bayer Sager and was of course on Living without your Love. Can't answer your other questions I'm afraid

There is quite alot written about this song, Linda.
I'll try and narrow it down to my own understanding of the text:
It was decided to release the song as a single because it was appropriate in view of Dusty's return to the UK.
Some critics obviously thought that it was a cynical ploy to appeal to the sentimentality of her fans.
Carole Bayer Sager , one of the writers, issued her own version of the song on her 1978 album called 'Too'...in which there was an extra verse.(Paul Howes includes some of the lyrics)
My own feelings are that it was good that Dusty left that out, as it would have sounded very mawkish.
The piece goes on to say that Dusty gave a brilliant live TV performance of the song, just after she found out that her provincial tour dates had been cancelled.
This performance is on the 'Good Times' a CD produced by the Dusty Springfield Bulletin.
I just realised Linda, that hardly any of your question was answered!
....But, I did my best!..

I didn't produce all that Carole cause it don't answer the questions --but it makes interesting reading all the same!
My up to date copy of Paul Howes hard back book arrived last Friday and its brilliant Linda--something to look forward to!

Not to keen on this song to be quite honest, I remember Dusty performing it on TOTP circa April '79, it all seemed a little sad, the audience were looking at Dusty as if to say 'who's this then?', thank goodness for the Pet shop boys a few years later!

This is from the Shirley 'HUGE TONSILS' Bassey Show...
The show which Paul Howes refers to is, The Pebble Mill Show, which used to be screened at lunchtimes I think.
I love this song, by the way.
