A lot of publicity over the last week regarding the 40th anniversary
of the day the Pirate Radio stations stopped broadcasting.
The Pirate Stations played Dusty extensively over the few years
they were around. I can recall Radio 270 playing Goin Back around
six times in one day.
Dusty also recorded a farewell message to Radio London that was
played in the final hours of the station.
Great days ! Take me back !!!

I used to listen to Radio Caroline on my trannie.
They used to play Dusty a great deal too.
As you say Chris --happy days--haven't those 40 years just flown by.
Nice to see you posting again--I aways enjoy your posts.

Great to hear from you, Chris.
I didn't bother with the Pirate Stations, I only knew of Radio Caroline.
I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg.(That wasn't pirate was it?)..
Yes, 'Retro Sixties' is definitely in vogue at the moment.
I'm wonderin... Do you remember the first day of Radio One and the first record that Tony Blackburn played?...
Cos I do!...  ..and I'm willing to bet that you do too.

'Flowers in the rain' by The Move ...7am on a Saturday morning it was.
It took a number of years for the BBC to get their act together. The first few years they couldn't match the excitement of the pirate stations - playing 'safe tunes, by safe artists'.
The pirates always took a chance - I remember Radio London picking 'When your young and in love' by The Marvelettes as their 'record of the week' when no other radio station knew Motown was more than The Supremes! It became their biggest UK hit. Radio London often had Dusty's new single as 'record of the week' or 'this weeks hot shot'. From memory these included I'll try anything', 'What's it gonna be', 'I close my eyes and count to ten' and 'How can I be sure'. Radio London ceased just a few weeks before Radio Caroline, playing out at 3pm on a Monday afternoon with Frankie Vaughan's 'There must be a way' , and dedicating it to the Postmaster general (who was responsible for silencing the pirates.

I remember getting up early for school on the first day of Radio One
- my mother was in shock as to why I was out of bed before seven !!
Yes Brian the Pirate Stations were better - very unpredictable and
more likely to play some of the black american artists we knew little
about.

Just realised there was no school on Saturday - my mother must
have been shocked at me getting up at that time on saturday morning.

I think Radio One started on a Monday Morning...Not Saturday...
I'm wonderin if our Guru, Brian is wrong on this one?. .

To answer your question Linda--
Pirate radio station were ships anchored off the English coast which were very popular in the 60's.
They played great music and most of the Radio 1 and 2 DJ's started on these pirate stations--including Tony Blackburn, Johnny Walker, Kenny Everett, Emperor Rosco, Dave Lee Travis.

No I'm not!...it was a Saturday...I remember it well - the previous day was a Friday ...it was 7am SATURDAY...I had cornflakes on that day

From what I can remember Tony Blackburn never played much Dusty, she was played by Dave Lee Travis, Johnny Walker, Kenny Everitt, Dave Cash mainly in those days.
