They're really different versions, but I gotta say the Carpenters version because it means so much to me. It took a while for me to love Dusty's version because for me Karen's version was always the ONLY version of that song.. and I daren't listen to Dusty's version at first, and when I first heard it, I didn't really like it But it's grown on me a lot, and I do love it, I love the end part of it. Dusty's is closer to how it was originally meant to be, the Carpenters changed it around and made it into something else.. Richard is a genius

I like Karen Carpenters voice a lot but for me she simply can't hold a torch to Dusty. I've always preferred recordings of Karen's as against 'live' performances. Whenever I heard her sing 'live' I was struck by how relatively weak her vocals actually were - good production on their recordings disguised this fact.
I'm now preparing to duck below the parapets .

I agree with Janie. I like Karen Carpenters voice, but it's incomparable to Dusty's (IMO).
The title of the song is "They LONG To Be Close To You" - and I think Dusty really conveys that longing. The Carpenters version is soporific in comparison. Personally I love the orchestration on Dusty's version - it really enhances that 'longing' and urgency in Dusty's vocal.

The beauty about the Carpenter's "Close To You" is Richard's arrangement as much as it is Karen's vocal performance. They were incredible together.
As far as Karen on stage, I don't think she had a presence at all, compared to Dusty, but she never, not once, had a sour note on stage. It has been said that you could wake Karen up at 3:00 a.m. and she would be able to sing any song well enough to record. Only once in her career did she need to cancel a show because her voice was gone (1972). In fact, their fourth album, in 1972, was recorded when Karen had laryngitis. (Stupid, but true.)
