Yes - the 'theme' for the fancy dress is 'wartime'. I'm going as Gregory Pecker-up . Pen, will no doubt outdo us all as Vera Lynn or Nellie Melba. Anyone with '78's' by Ted Heath & his band will be more than welcome, as 'the homes' collection was sat on in 1987.

Awww never mind Pen, I'm sure you'll be fine! I understand the come down from Dusty Day takes the WHOLE week, but I'm sure you'll have plenty of energy left! Mind you if not, I'm sure someone at the home will be very happy to prescribe you something!

Well I am! I've been here since 12.15 and have already knitted myself a willy warmer...well I say knitted - I RAN OUT OF WOOL , but I still got a prize - a 'pill-dispenser' with the days of the week on the side I took tea with the home's oldest resident Flora this afternoon. She's 101, but has the body of a 98 year-old , and boy does she know some filthy jokes I hope the others arrive in time for dinner - tonight it's boiled ham & crabapple salad....with chips

...and there was me expecting a liquidized dinner- for all the folk who have to 'gum' it! Although prehaps a liquid meal would have proven better, as the crabapple salad kept trying to crawl off my plate!!! I now have my very own surgical stocking- i'm sure I can find a use for it ... however I was very tempted to stuff it into 'next door's' mouth- they kept me awake ALL night with their snoring!
Feeling optimistic about today though, the 'underground' experience should be fun- oh by the way, have you seen my spotty boiler suit? And no doubt the fancy dress will go down a storm tonight- can't wait to see everyone's outfits! |

Of course the day hasn't gone without a bit of 'trauma' We all went down Denby hole at 9.44 this morning. Firstly Dave managed to knock a boulder off a shelf which hit Pen on her right hand - "ME VARNISH, ME VARNISH" came the cry - it echoed around the cave like a Phil Spector production After a short break we all crawled on - it was wet - it was cold - it was smelly , but we carried on. 350 yards and an hour later we stopped for refreshments. Trek had brought some cream buns which at the time seemed a good idea, but unfortunately after Pen and the golf pro had scoffed 4 each they couldn't get through the gap as it had gone 'straight to the hips' We tugged - we pushed - we eventually pulled Trek through, but Pen just wouldn't squeeze between the rock. We had to call 'rescue'. Motown Diva sang us some uptempo Motown clasics to help pass the time, although 'Reach out, I'll be there' seemed totally unappropriate considering the circumstances Any pot hole down - the rescue team arrived, sprayed Pen with some WD40 and she slid through, albiet muttering all the time about 'ruined hairstyles'. When we reached the surface the tv cameras were there - look out for the item on 'News at ten' - Pen is the dark slippery one lol. I DO hope tonights dance goes without a hitch.

Last nights wartime dance was a great success - I won a prize for my portrayal of Gregory Pecker-up . This was in the shape of a framed ration book, which I'll hang in the loo as soon as I get home. The girls looked FAB. Trek suprised us all as Betty Grable complete with gravy-browning legs and even managed a straight line up the back of her stockings The Motown diva took on the roll of Vera Lynn and even gave us a song. The residents looked bemused as they had never heard 'There'll be blue birds over the white cliffs of Detroit' before. Now we come to Pen....originally I think she was going to be a land-army girl or Nelly Melba, but due to the unfortunate mishap in the morning she looked a bit on the dark side, so decided on Josephine Baker instead. With her 'flapper' dress, beads and headband she had all the 'boys' * swooning * for 'boys' read 'old boys'. I know for a fact she went out behind the nissan hut at least THREE times doing the Hokey Cokey with a string of gents behing her! Today has been a day for relaxing. We listened to the vicar - had cucumber sandwiches and discussed 'the good old days'. Olive, a resident for 20 years made us all blush with her stories of what happened in the dug-out on Boxing Day 1944...I'll tell you about it when your older A VERY SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND.

I've reached my peak today--things don't get any better...as Betty Grable. The gravy browning did start to run abit when it rained just after tea, but the indelible ink lines stayed put...in fact they will stay put for the next 6 months I think
I have been In The Mood all day and have really enjoyed dancing with a bloke who came as Barnes Wallace..he amazed us all, bouncing pebbles down the river.
Pen is abit slippery tonight after yesterday but well pleased that Trevor Macdoughnut interviewed her.

This topic is so much easier if you were actually 'there' during the wartime years... and from what I'm reading Tootsies knowledge is far too convincing to be 'just his imagination running away with him'..
Any road up, The Joe Wilson Sextet did quite a good imitation of Glenn Millers band, and their 'In The Mood' was breathtakingly average.
I must admit my dance card was completely chocca.
I literally danced myself dizzy.
I did the Gay Gordons with... Gay Gordon.. I did the hokey cokey, and learned what it was all about. Then I did the military two step with someone who called himself 'Adolf'...Very bad taste, I thought.
However, it aint easy to jive and bop to 'A Nightingale sang in Berkeley Square' unless you've had at least two Babychams.
The Evening came to a tearful end when Hilda Frogstrap dressed up as Vera Lynn sang 'I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places'...
It wasn't the song that made us cry and it was the horrific catterwauling of Ms. Frogstrap....
She was so bad... I've entered her for the 'Britains Got Talent Show' next Saturday night.
Bye For Now,
PEN xx

...So where are we off to next? Well whereever we go, the weather will be gorgeous - just as long as we don't get stuck down any potholes again! As for singing 'Reach Out, I'll Be There' I could hardly come out with 'Stuck In The Middle With You' could I? Mind you, given the circumstances it is fair to say that I did have a 'clown to the left of me' and a 'joker to the right' (I'll leave it to you to decide who was which)
Still everyone just about managed to get back safely in one piece...

I know it's been a while, but I've been busy organising another trip for our village 'over 90's club'. That's sorted now...so here are details of OUR next trip :- Saturday 17th we will be taking a hot air balloon flight over the Malvern Hills At the moment details are still being finalised, but you will need (a) - a good head for heights (b) - a supply of hot air (c) - Qwells
More details to follow

I thought we'd been over The Malverns once!..
No matter, I could be getting them confused with The Himalayas.
Anyway I have all the essentials in place for the trip.
I have a good head for heights.. in fact my heights are practically wuthering.
I am blessed with oodles of hot air.
And I've had a packet of Qwells in my bathroom cabinet since 1984. Unopened.
So, all present, correct and waiting on further orders.

I'm not sure... Thats why I didn't take them.
I think they may be some sort of travel tranquiliser style pill.
They should come with the ticket for one of Tootsies Tours.
