Has anything exciting or unexpected happened where you live recently?

... This thread sounds like the start of 'I don't wanna hear it anymore' Nicky...
Well the young man next door has just passed his driving test and a 'banger' has now appeared on the drive.
That's exciting for him , and unexpected for us.

I guess the most exciting things happening in our neighborhood are happening to one of Black Rock's "favorite sons" actor John Ratzenberger (best known as "Cliffie", the know-it-all mailman on the TV show "Cheers") As a child, he lived just down the street from where we live now.

In addition to doing voices for various animated characters in Disney and Pixel films (ie "Toy Story"),the last couple of years, he has been traveling the country in a motor home, visiting places that manufacture things "Made In America" (also the name of his TV program on the Discovery Channel). His crew films people in factories making such things as baseball bats, Campbell's soup, Dr Pepper soda, Gibson guitars, marbles, helicoptors, etc. An educational and fun show.
He has also been on the "reality" show "Dancing With the Stars" this year..and made a hometown appearance as the Grand Marshall of the local Fourth of July parade.

Ha ha ha, Carole, you poor thing, having to hear the old banger every day. And T, wow, I bet your neighbourhood is littered with the rich and famous.
I'm having a Resident's meeting tomorrow night, so I'm sure I will have some exciting stories to report on soon. One of my neighbours was arrested recently, but I don't know the outcome yet (this was totally unexpected). |

Mmm, The guy from 'Swing Out Sister' used to live near me.
Then he got famous and moved away.
...But his parents lived around here, and if you were really, really nosey you could see some Silver/gold Discs hanging on their wall.
It's still not as good as T's is it?....

A local candidate in the upcoming federal elections actually did a door-knock. I've lived in the area all my life and I have NEVER received a door-knock from a politician before.

Exciting: JB started school yesterday, he's a big boy now!
Unexpected: My 17-year old neighbour died in a terrible car accident last week, the funeral was yesterday. 600 people attended, it was packed.
Exciting and Unexpected: MY PAUL HOWES BIBLE ARRIVED! And amazon had informed me that it wouldn't be shipped until next month!
I think it's safe to say that there are no celebrities that lived in my neighbourhood... because I technically don't live in a neighbourhood, I live in the middle of nowhere.

Our Fife & Drum Corps - The Spirit of Black Rock - is hosting an outdoor informal concert next Tuesday night from 6:30 til 7:30pm. Friends, family and neighbors are invited over to the Norden Club to nosh on hot dogs, drinks and other munchies while they listen to us play tunes from the American Revolution and Civil War years.
So if you're not busy that night, come on over.

Here are a few truisms from our neck of the woods ~
Forget Rednecks ......here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about New Englanders...
>If your local Dairy Queen (ice cream shop) is closed from September through May, you live in New England. >If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you live in New England. >If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you live in New England. >If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you live in New England. >If "Vacation" means going anywhere south of New York City for the weekend, you live in New England. >If you measure distance in hours, you live in New England.
>If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you live in New England.
>If you have switched from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back again, you live in New England.
>If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you live in New England.
>If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked, you live in New England.
>If you carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you live in New England.
>If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you live in New England.
>If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph -- you're going 80 and everybody is passing you, you live in New England.
>If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow, you live in New England.
>If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction, you live in New England.
>If you have more miles on your snow blower than your car, you live in New England.
>If you find 10 degrees "a little chilly", you live in New England.
>If you actually understand these jokes, and forward them to all your New England friends & others, you live in New England.

In what way 'involved'?...

Very fishy. He was the armed robber allegedly - broke into a hotel room at the Palace Station Casino and took some memorabilia that supposedly belonged to him.
O.J. Simpson is the saddest case in the history of American justice.
I think a dark cloud descended on America since that verdict - you can murder and get away with it, you can brazenly steal national elections on live TV and no one protests, you can bomb the bejesus out of a defenseless country and no one minds.
It's like America lost its moral fiber - there's no right or wrong anymore, just getting away with it. No sense of shame or fair play.
However, O.J. Simpson is so loathed, he can't make a comeback. But he's capable of violence and even murdering again.

Sadly, the UK is much the same....
Whatever happened to integrity?..

I agree about the 'dark cloud', but I think the moral fibre was never in place to begin with. The OJ verdict may have made it more clear, but justice is (and always has been) an illusion by the ones in power.

The most exciting thing to happen here for a while is the local airshow today and tomorrow in Shoreham-By-Sea and seeing as it's been lovely and warm and sunny today some friends and I took their kids to see the show.
For most of the day it was fantastic but then around 3.15pm-3.30pm ish it was brought to a rather upsetting and tragic end (especially for the kids who were under the age of ten) when one of the Hurricanes taking part in a Battle of Britain display crashed headlong into the field opposite us, bursting into a ball of flames and thick black smoke and killing the pilot instantly. Luckily it came down away from all the spectators so only one life was lost, but one is still too many.
It looked like pilot error but there will obviously be an investigation into the crash in case it was a malfunction on the plane. It was horribly shocking for everyone but I suppose as adults you are better equipped to deal with these things than young children... they all said they were OK but whether any of them will suffer nightmares about it is yet to be seen. I know it's not an image I'm going to get out of my head for a while.
A horrible way to end such a lovely, fun day out.

UK is much the same?
Could it be that the Global Corporation has taken over everywhere?
In the US congress is bought and paid for by corporate interests. The slaughter in Iraq is a corporate enterprise. Everything is for profit.
Bill Hicks, the late, great comedian said we should all just eat rice and beans and own one pair of jeans and three T-shirts and break every effing corporation. And he died in 1992 I think.
The consumer doesn't realize he's responsible. For example, the Home Depot (a huge DIY chain) is a big Bush donor. You a buy a can of paint there, you've just contributed to the Republican Party coffers, not that the Democrats are any better. Never mind voting in the elections, you've just voted where it really counts.
Instead of anti-war marches (so 20th century) activists should organize a day without buying. Organize a lot of those - there won't be any money to fight in Iraq. |
