The college bands at the basketball games are made up of approx 30 students - members of their schools' huge marching bands. Each university that has a team playing in the tournament sends a 'pep band', cheerleaders, dancers and a school mascot to support their team. The two bands from the schools involved in each game play their school songs to fire up their team and their fans - and alternate entertaining the crowd during time outs.
Here's a shot of some of the crazies in the University of Connecticut's pep band ~

In the world of college basketball, this time of the year is called 'March Madness'. There are 64 teams playing in games all over the country for three weeks, until there is only one undefeated team standing.
(Sara - the first two rounds in the East were held in my hometown so I was able to go to the games on the weekend and after work yesterday.)

Sara - Those are 'pompons'~ plastic thingies in the school colors, shaken (or worn, in some cases) by cheerleaders and fans.

I doubt that those plastic thingies would have much effect on a blaring horn. And yeah, I never expected to hear a Dusty song played at a college basketball game by a college band ~ from Kentucky of all places!

Desmond Carrington played 'Dear John' by the Springfields on Wednesday night and I'm sure I heard Son of A Preacherman on earlier on Radio 2

I always loved this....so clever, and it sounded as if they had a ball recording it.
