So, what about this gent, Barak Obama?
He seems to be creating quite a stir in the Democratic Party.
I must say when I saw Hillary Clinton standing with Bill Clinton and Madeleine Albright.. I thought voting for her, could be a backward step for the U.S.
Any views on this?..

I do like Hillary... and I liked what Bill tried to achieve with the Peace Talks in the Middle East.
Barak is proving to be a very charasmatic speaker. He seems to be about new leadership and positive change for the future... for all Americans.
They're both worthy candidates and as I heard one political commentator say,as long as a Democrat gets up and we see an end to the awful reign of gun-totin' "Dubya".
Either way,it's going to be historic - either the first woman President or the first black President.

I can't say I'm too keen on Hilary Clinton. She seems rather cold and stand-offish, unlike her old man who apparantly wasn't either

If I were American I doubt I'd vote for Hilary......I can't recall in what context, but things she once said like "I ain't gonna stand by my man like Tammy Wynette" and "I coulda stayed at home and baked cookies "......or words to that effect, and promptly alienated America's homemakers!
Obama seems a decent kinda chap, but so does Huckabee.....well, he does according to an article I read about him in one of Britain's best loved newspapers!!

To be realistic, their platforms are generally similar so the primaries are more about posturing and personality. Canadians seem to prefer Hillary to Barack although Barack's popularity is growing here. I have generally been more impressed with Hillary as she's been more outspoken and 'daring' to voice her opinions on hot-button issues such as gay marriage and abortion (which I still don't understand why these issues are even controversial in America these days.... ).
However, the latest polls suggest that Canadians aren't fussy about who the next Democratic candidate will be, just as long as the Republican party gets the boot. I believe the statistic that I read this morning was that only 3% of Canadians would like to see a republican government south of the border. Personally I'd be happy with either Clinton or Obama, though not so much Edwards.
As for Hillary's lack of emotion, she's been getting a tremendous amount of coverage in the news since she nearly cried in public yesterday. The media made a big deal of the fact that she got teary-eyed. LOL
Mike Huckabee scares the out of me, almost as much as Mick Romney.

I don't know much about the Democratic Candidates policies at the moment, but I'm sure that The American public will give the Republicans the boot.. Unfortunately, we are ALL aware of their war-mongering policies.
It looks like Obama has a bandwagon rolling... but who knows what could happen??
How unfortunate though, that the charismatic OBama has a name so similar to OSama.(Bin Laden)

Yeah and his middle name is Hussein. LOL
Obama is actually using the term 'movement' instead of 'campaign' and it seems to be working out for him.

Yes, quite a turn up for the books.
This should be a keenly fought contest.
I just hope that it'll be fought fair and square.

I can't decide between them at the moment yet but whichever wins the nomination i hope they go on to win the whole thing. Either being president would be historic and a big improvement.
The election system is kinda different too

The next real test will be on Feb 5th when California, NY and several other States vote. Florida votes before this date.
Hillary seems to have turned it around at the moment, but I think its going to be a close run thing.
Me--- I'm not sure, but as Rob says, I hope 1 of these 2 becomes the next President.

Make no mistake, Obama is a corporate groomed and sponsored boy (as is Hillary, but she's a girl). His biggest contributors seem to be banks, investment groups, pro-nuclear power interests and entities who want to privatize Social Security. Those who pay the piper call the tune.
Obama is remarkable in that he has no message, absolutely none. He is running on "unity" and "change" - what change he never says. I hope he doesn't mean that by the time he's through with us, we'll only have change left in our pockets.
He voted against the war in Iraq, because he thought we should bomb Pakistan instead. He has promised to expand the military budget, like it's not over bloated now. I think by change, he means we should change the countries we bomb. Didn't George W. Bush run on change and unity, too?
This from Sam Smith, a DC based journalist:
"One of the best kept secrets in America today is the extent to which hope and faith are being used as seedy substitutes for action and reason. As they say in the 'hood, hope don't pay the cable. Someone like Obama functions as a political sedative. His message is that we don't have to worry so much about what's happening because we can let the future handle it. This is not audacious. It's either a con or cowardice."
As for Hillary being cold...
I used to know this singer, Nancy Lamott, who died of a rare disease in 1994. Nancy was one of the greats - truly sublime. Bill and Hillary invited her to sing at the White House, liked her so much, they invited her again.
When she lay dying in the hospital, both Bill and Hillary called her several times and the nurses were agog "It's the President for you, Nancy. It's the First Lady, Nancy".
So we know the Clintons have superb taste in music, they don't care if someone is world famous or obscure, they made the time to comfort an artist and a nice person they just liked. Good for them.

My understanding was that he didn't vote at all regarding Iraq because he hadn't even been elected at that time. But either way, the facts about Iraq were Bush-ified to begin with. (Did anyone really think, upon election in 2000, that G.W. would leave Iraq alone, 9/11 or not? He wanted to finish what daddy started.)

As for Hillary, that's a great story FN. She's damned either way. If she shows emotion, she's 'not strong enough to lead' and if she shows little emotion, she's a b*tch. It's the catch-22 of all career women. The only difference is that the whole world is watching. I've been following Hillary since she began campaigning for universal health care when she was the first lady, and I think she's got what it takes. She would have my vote.
But what should I care, I'm not even american.

Unfortunately all elections now, are based more on personality and looks than policies.
The media drives what goes on and what we should think etc..
Anyhow, its all very interesting.
We need to know about what happens in America, cos what happens there, effects the whole world.
Your observations and insights re Obama and The Clintons are most welcome.
So whats with this 72yr old Republican, John McCain?
...Surely, he hasn't got a snowballs chance in hell?

Nancy Lamott was a wonderful singer, I had the pleasure of working with her in London in a show called "It's Better with a Band" with lyrics by David Zippel. We also recorded a song called "Another Mister Right Left" just her and me on piano. Sorry this is off topic but what a great loss.

Many thanks for the input FN --its nice to read something from an Americans view point. Interesting comments.
I for one would welcome USA comment--as well as the rest of the world of course.

I knew Nancy quite well. I was booked for a week at the Comedy Stop at the Trop in Atlantic City and she was singing in the lounge at Caesars Palace. I went over to see her at noon, when she began. The sun was streaming in, people were playing the slots, no one took notice of Nancy. Then she started singing softly. Within 10 minutes, the lounge was full - people just sat down with their nickel buckets and listened, such was the power of her singing.
She came to see me almost every night - not much to do in Atlantic City. On her day off we drove with her pianist to Wildwood and rode all the dinky wooden rollercoasters and did the water slides.
Besides being a sublime singer, she was just the nicest person.
Glad to know someone here knew of her. |
