Oh wow! That's a great picture! Thanks Marg!
First thing that I thought of was Alistair Cooke and "Masterpiece Theatre". LOL

Or Alistair Cookie from Monsterpiece Theatre:

„I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself“
She could be Van Morrison’s big sister, at least on a musical level. There is no other white woman like Dusty Springfield in history of Pop, no other woman who had so much soul in her voice.
Until today she remains the “best Pop singer ever to have emerged out of Great Britain”, as the New York Times put it in 1999 in her obituary. Dusty Springfield died on 2nd March, some weeks before her 60th birthday.
There is plenty to tell about Mary Catherine Isobel Bernadette O’Brien – about this passionate artist, about the diva, about the insecure girl who, as Dusty Springfield, became an icon of pop culture. The great “Earbook – Simply Dusty” approaches this on 116 glossy pages and – much more important – on four CDs containing 98 songs.
The beautiful thing about this opulent showcase of her work is that it shows both the factor of glamour spread by Dusty Springfield, and a way of approaching her as a human being behind the limelight stream. About 100 photographs, detailed accompanying texts, and of course the songs convey a comprehensive picture of the artist, who lived a life full of struggles which took up a lot of her strength. Popularity and success on the one hand, lack of understanding and contempt on the other hand – the ‘White Lady of Soul” lived between extremes.
Before she became Dusty Springfield, Mary O’Brien was an average, English, middleclass girl, daughter of an accountant and loved music just like every other teenager did. She sung with brother Dion (later Tom Springfield) at the kitchen table, accompanying this with all household tools available.
Someday both were old enough to found The Springfields (with Tim Field) on a spring day’s meadow. Before this Dusty had already made some professional steps and proven to be a musical bomb waiting to explode.
After going through the early pop- stages with the Lana Sisters, “Seven Little Girls (sitting on the Back Seat)” Dusty emancipated quickly from being average. She left the band due to musical differences and started to look into Country, R’n’B and Soul on a trip to the USA with The Springfields .
Fascinated by the sound of Motown, Dusty produced dazzling records such as Will You Love Me Tomorrow and Whishing And Hoping for her 1964 Solo-debut “A Girl Called Dusty”, which ultimately heaved her into pop heaven.
Up there she was Queen, pop star and style icon, emulated by other girls – the remarkable hairdos and the eyes outlined by black eye shadow stood out from mainstream. But above all she was a perfectionist artist who, torn inside, seemed to be searching for the perfect song, being all insecure about how to do it.
‘Son of A Preacherman’ (1968) from her best (though flopped) album ‘Dusty In Memphis’ is one of her best pieces and somehow also exemplary for Dusty’s life. Just like ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” (1964), is a title which could be the essence of her everlasting search.
The strong catholic upbringing had a lifelong influence on the human being consisting out of the shy, private Mary O’Brien and the impulsive, eccentric stage personality Dusty Springfield. Dusty couldn’t defend herself, had violent fights with lovers, alcohol and drug abuse problems and was neglected by the US audience when she admitted in 1970 forthrightly that she’d be capable of loving both men and women.
Just on a side note: Some of the content in this article seems a little bit distorted. Dusty was successful in the States (even though it might have been not as much of a success if one compares it to Britain). And there is no reason to believe that there was an instant connection between her outing and her popularity in the US.

Thank you Vera!
This is the first time I ever thought of Dusty as Van Morrison's big sister.

Thankyou for the translation Vera!..
The only words I'd recognised were Dusty Springfield..
I like the idea of Dusty singing with Tom at the kitchen table using 'household tools' for accompaniment....CUTE!

The pic by the way is from a Charles Aznavour special called For me...Formidable. Dusty spent (according to Paul Howes) a week in Cannes to record this in July 1969.
On some DVD's I got from a guy in the US a very shaky recording is on one of them where she is sitting on a chair by a fire--as in the picture.
