I sent the answer to her blog just in case, Dave. This also brings to mind another challenge...thinking about your Weakest Link trivia reminds me...how many times has Dusty been the answer to a game show question, US (more of a challenge I think) or UK?

The one I know is from Blockbusters (US version, 1980-82), when they asked what S was "singer Dusty, or (forget the rest)"

Well done, Dave!..
I am such a technopohobe I wasn't even sure what you were talking about.
Hope you get a reply.

James: I've heard the Question "Who was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O' Brien known as?" many times.Last time was on the 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' Show.

Of course its the only question to which I know the answer.

http://www.malverngazette.co.uk/news/malvnewsroundup/display.var.2398927.0.its_viva_las_vegas_for_katy.php

N.B. for DSNers - Its Katy's nd Andy's DOG who is called Blue

It's Viva Las Vegas for Katy

AFTER capturing the hearts of the nation on BBC One talent show The One and Only as her idol Dusty Springfield, singing sensation Katy Setterfield is now taking Las Vegas by storm.

She is now more than halfway through a three-month residency performing to packed crowds in the bright lights of Sin City', and has a three-month tour of the UK to look forward to when she returns in mid-August.

"Las Vegas is great, and the last few months have been just amazing," said Katy, who lived in Malvern Wells until shortly before her big break. "When I first came out here I was a little concerned about how the American audiences would take to Dusty, but they just absolutely adore her.

"In a way I will be sorry to leave, but there are two sides, as I obviously miss my husband Andy and I cannot wait to come back to the UK and do my own show. It is like a dream come true."

Katy's first stop when she returns to the UK will be to record an album in Cardiff, which will be released to coincide with her 50-date tour, which starts on August 30.

But after that she will be heading straight for Malvern, which is still home for her beloved horse Blue.

In December she will perform in Berlin, and she is already planning a return to Vegas, along with "a few other projects" - which could include a performance in Malvern - for 2009.

"I still cannot quite believe where I am and what I am doing," said Katy of her overnight rise to stardom. "Last year I always knew exactly where I was going to be and what I was going to be doing, but this year that has all been completely turned on its head. It's just been incredible."

UPDATE....just had an e-mail from Andy with the latest 'Katy' news . Here's the main thrust of his message - he did send a wonderful article from a Sunday newspaper mag which I'll try and get on here (slight technical jiggery pokery required from me I think before it will be visible in this space though!

In the meantime...from Andy.......

Katy will be home on August 18th and straight into full days of interviews at various radio studios in London for local stations around the country. She will also be on BBC Breakfast and/or 24 on the 20th. Other TV slots are being arranged.

She's been conducting interviews from Vegas on a regular basis for the
last month and the copy is just beginning to turn up - see attached
doc(this is the article I'll [Janie] get on here or otherwise link to ) I particularly like the 'expose myself' quote; I don't remember
seeing that in the script!

Tickets are on sale in most, but not all, venues now - so the tension
is mounting! The show promises to be great, so we hope to have an
audience!!!

Sadly the TV show has not ben re-commissioned, so footage of Katy in
Vegas will never be seen. We are working on other ways of getting her
back in the nation's telly-watching eye and refuse to think of the
programme's demise as a bad thing. After all, Katy is now the one and only one
and only!

Thanks for the info Janie. I have to say I'm disappointed that the BBC are not going to re-commission the show, as I'm sure that everyone who watched the show would all like to see how Katy has got on in Vegas, and how the American audience welcomed her.

Never mind... we still have the UK dates to look forward too!

I share your disappointment Emma with regards to the recommissioning of The One and Only. I'm miffed though that the powers that be felt it appropriate to only follow up on Katy's Las Vegas adventure IF the show was recommissioned. As a TV licence fee payer I want to know ALL about it - I think we'll have to storm the BBC building in protest .

Here's the link re the article referred to in Andy's e-mail. You need to click on the appropriate page to read the article online. I do have a very decent print of it so I'll scan it in shortly - be warned that when I clicked on the link and tried to load the page it froze up my system .

Here it is......although I'm not too sure you'll be able to read it so I've copied it in text form as well!

EARLIER this year, television viewers were treated to the sight of Dusty Springfield trying to out-sing Madonna, Frank Sinatra and Robbie
Williams.

Brought together by BBC talent show The One and Only, the country’s most talented tribute acts waged war every Saturday night until a winner finally emerged. In the face of intense competition, 37-year-old Katy Setterfield was named the victor with her uncanny impersonation of the queen of blue-eyed soul, Dusty Springfield.

Her prize was not just national acclaim, but a chance to grace the stage in the entertainment capital of the world. Setterfield would spend the next three months performing as Springfield in the Legends in Concert show in Las Vegas.

It was an incredible dream come true for Setterfield, who had been starring in a
touring nostalgia show before entering the contest
.
“I came here back in 1993 and at the time I was working for a music shop,” she said from her Sin City hotel room.

“I don’t think I ever imagined I would be here for three months working. Everyone
should visit here because it’s so mad and weird. It’s been a real joy for me. I love
America.”

Setterfield has enjoyed singing since she was a child and has spent the last eight
years touring with That’ll Be The Day, a long-running production which celebrates
the songs and stars of days gone by. She had already started developing her
Dusty voice long before the talent show came along, something which had made
her nervous to begin with.

Icon

“It’s a nostalgia show and we obviously had to put Dusty into it because she was
the icon of the 60s on the female side,” she said.

“The boss said ‘give it a go’ but I didn’t know if I could do her. I sang You Don’t
Have To Say You Love Me and it brought the house down. I couldn’t believe that I
could do her and sound like her, because I had been performing as Cher.

“Dusty was someone I admired so much and was one of the reasons I got into
singing when I was a kid.”

Her vocal coach told Setterfield about The One and Only after auditioning for the
expert role, which was ultimately filled by Carrie and David Grant.

“She said ‘you’re the best at what you do’,

so I auditioned to see how far I could get and it snowballed from there,” Setterfield
said.

The experts and viewing public evidently agreed. On May 12 she found herself on a
plane to Las Vegas to take up her place among the stars.

“That’ll Be The Day was an absolutely wonderful show but we toured the country
and it was very hard, because it was a onenight performance that kept moving on,”
she said.

“The great thing about Vegas is it’s very stable being in one place and it’s big,
because it’s the entertainment capital of the world. People come (to the show) and then go and see big acts like Elton John. It’s so wonderful to be in the centre of things
going on.”

No matter how exciting the job, a contract abroad can be a mixed blessing.

“My mum loves travelling so she sees it as a great excuse,” Setterfield said. “The
only downside is that my husband stays at home – he’s getting ready for my tour. We
worked together on That’ll Be The Day, when we were together 24/7, and I miss
him terribly. But that’s the nature of the business.”

Revival

One of Setterfield’s key concerns, first with The One and Only and then with
transferring to the US,was whether people would be interested in hearing
Springfield’s music revived. But the response from the public immediately dismissed
any doubts she had about Dusty’s legacy.

Describing the reaction to both ventures as “amazing”, she revealed her relief at
audiences’ evident fondness for Springfield.

“It was overwhelming how much the public took to Dusty,” she said. “She died in
1999 and I was not sure how people would take to her, but she’s a sleeping giant.

“For me she is the greatest female singer. She had so much soul and was ahead of her
time. A lot of the public said they had fallen back in love with her music, which is job
done as far as I’m concerned.”

As much as she enjoys her exhilarating tribute to one of the music industry’s greatest
icons, Setterfield would also like the chance to emerge from Dusty’s shadow
occasionally.

“I would like the opportunity to perform as me,” she said. “Part of the show when
I’m out on tour is to expose myself and show the audience the difference between
me and Dusty. I write my own music and I’m negotiating record deals. Hopefully the
public will hear me.”

Appearing on a televised talent show is an incredible opportunity for any singer
and has paid off tremendously for Setterfield, but she was not entirely
unwary about entering.

“A lot of people said I was taking a huge risk,” she said. “I could have been kicked off
on the first show, but if you don’t put your head above the parapet in life you don’t
find out.

“It was an opportunity and it’s taken me down a different path.

“As a performer, it’s not just about paying the mortgage – it’s about experiencing different things.

“With That’ll Be The Day I was getting a bit too comfortable and a bit bored and I
love different things.

“I’m a very lucky girl.”

Thanks for posting the article Janie, I especially love the first picture of Katy, not only is she singing better than ever, she is beginning to look more like Dusty each day.

I feel sad that she will soon be leaving Vegas and the US, but happy to hear she plans on returning. I also feel happy that it's getting closer to Dusty Day 09, which Katy told me she is really looking forward to. I wonder if her plans to return to Vegas include The Legends Concert at the IP, or elsewhere? The IP is one of the oldest hotels on the Vegas strip and plans for implosition are on the horizon. If you ask me, the Sahara is the one that needs to be imploded, what a dump! I will also feel sad to see IP go, after seeing Katy there.

Heard from Andy yesterday. He reports that 'The CD sounds wonderful, and the touring band is pretty hot too.' Not long now folks. I'm looking forward to the 31st which is of course, when Katy is doing her Worthing gig, the second in her UK tour (the first if my memory serves me correctly [too lazy to look it up ] being in Great Yarmouth)

Andy is also currently up to his eye balls sorting out the tour programme. Busy, busy in the Setterfield/Hodge camp .

Katy's coming home on Monday!

This is part of a message I received today from Andy:

The last shows were fabulous, apparently, with the cast making a fuss of her leaving on a big scale; standing ovations from the crowd and an open invitation to go back whenever possible.

Welcome home Katy.....and here's wishing you the very best for your UK tour. See you in Worthing on the 31st! .
