Ev'rything's Coming Up Dusty was the first Dusty album I ever bought and it knocked me out. As I've said before I think this is the best album I have ever heard by anyone.

Memphis is great don't get me wrong but if I can only choose one then it has to be ECUD - the whole production down to the packaging is just perfection.

I always thought the sleeve of the British Memphis album was dire with a most unflattering picture of Dusty, I'd really like to know who approved it? The U.S. sleeve is much more attractive.

As far as album covers go or sleeves, whatever you wish to call it. I have to agree that ECUD is outstanding, especially the record, as it has a lovely book with some great pictures. Gee I haven't looked at it in years. I love the picture of Dusty in jeans on the cover of "A Girl Called Dusty", always thought it was one of her best. I have the US Rhino version of Memphhis and it's a bit unusal being a cardboard sleeve with no jewel case, but also nicely done. I also have the newer release of the UK version of Memphis and the I don't think the picture is awful of Dusty, but they certainly could have picked a better one!

Although DIM is considered Dusty's greatest triumph, and it IS a brilliant album, ECUD wins hands down for me. It was the album that told us a white girl can sing soul often better the the original American recordings - it was an album that proved ballads needn't be 'slushy' - it was an album FULL of great songs, any one of them could have been a hit single (in the UK NONE was issued as a single) - proof just how far ahead Dusty was compared to other 'white' - NO, ANY girl singer at the time.
The packaging on the original vinyl album was outstanding -Phillips really went to town on this one. The e-x-p-a-n-d-e-d cd issue with the 8 extra tracks left off the original release proved even more how Dusty's choice of material was outstanding.
ECUD IS DUSTY AT HER VERY BEST.

Brian.

Dusty In Memphis wins it for me, sorry people
They are very different albums, and ECUD is fun, and it's brilliant, and I love it.. But "Memphis" has a whole sound that is more special to me somehow. It's beautiful. I don't know how to explain.

I love Memphis, but ECUD just shades it for me because of the eclectic choice of songs and the freshness of it even today.

For production and the class of the musician Memphis is better.
But ECUD excites me more!!

DIM is one of the ten greatest albums of all time.

If Dusty had only recorded ECUD and no other album, she would still be one of the great icons.

Most serious music critics will go with DIM and not ECUD. ECUD in some ways is a more exciting album and shows Dusty's voice at it's most powerful.

DIM is more restrained but the MUSIC!!!! the MUSIC is ethereal!!! and the whole (original) album is just about perfect and the songs require Dusty to sing in a more restrained breathy style that no one else could ever match.

So whilst I can understand people saying ECUD is their FAVOURITE, for me DIM is easily her BEST album.

DIM is the best and for me my favourite has to be what I think is the best.

But I would proably listen to ECUD as much if not more than DIM.

I'm sorry but Noidea 1960 appears to be convinced that most serious music collectors favour Dusty In Memphis.

I AM a serious music collector but I do not like musical snobbery and being told what I should and should not like or what I should like better.

Everyone has their own favourites and tastes and you can't sway how people feel about a particular record.

Yes Memphis has a differet sound and so it should, it was recorded in a different country and Dusty was more mature.

As has been said by others on the site ECUD was exciting but there were also fantastic performances on every track, I know Simon Bell singled out I Had A Talk With My Man where Dusty came close to sounding like Cleo Laine on several notes.

Reputation - I have not told you what to like best - Read my messages again (I use the words "I" and "me").

I do beleive most music critics put DIM as DS's best album - that is all I said.

And I don't want Dusty to sound like Cleo Lane when she can sound like Dusty.

If you listen to the high note Dusty hits on that particular song you will understand the comparison to Cleo Laine's register. Nobody is saying we WANT Dusty to sound like Cleo, but it only proves what a great song stylist Dusty was being able to sing in so many different styles.

Memphis appears to have taken on a kind of cult following "Oh You Have To Listen To Memphis" kind of thing and it over-shadows Dusty's others work to the point that hardly any of her other albums are mentioned which is a great shame. She made many wonderful recordings before Memphis and it would be great if they were given the same accolades.

Okay Gents... We're all singing from the same 'hymn sheet' here, if not the same Dusty Album..

For what its worth, I personally prefer ECUD over DIM.

ECUD was a ground-breaking album at the time of its inception, and I remember hearing it for the first time and being totally blown away, straight away, by both the cover and its contents.

After Dusty died I bought the album(as well as many others) on CD.. and there I was... blown away again!!

DIM is a class album, but I found it harder to appreciate all the tracks at first.
However, over time I've begun to appreciate the songs more and the slick, classy production.

Summing it all up.. My preference has to be ECUD..Because it had an immediate impact on me.

I would have to say that my personal top 3 Dusty albums are:

Stay Awhile/I Only Want To Be With You (American release)
A Girl Called Dusty
ECUD

I fell in love with every track on these albums immediately. It has been said that DIM was ahead of it's time, which IMHO think it truly was. I agree with Carole that it took a while to like all the tracks on DIM. I still tend to hit skip on three of the bonus tracks. If you were to ask me which songs I like the least I would probably answer those three tracks: Willie and Laura Mae Jones, That Old Sweet Roll (Hi-De-Ho) and All The Kings Horses.

Marty

PS. Cleo Laine was introduced to me on the News one day many years ago with the announcer stating that Dusty Springfield is now a has been and Cleo Laine is now "IT" in the UK. You can imagine my reaction. I could never warm up to her since!

Considering Cleo was on the go long before Dusty I find that a very strange statement, but you can't hold Cleo responsible for the comments of an a*****e dj!

I am new to Dusty so am not influenced by any previous cults as they were unknown to me although I had read reviews on itunes/Amazon when choosing which CD's to buy. I have listened to all her 60's albums pretty close together and I also found DIM takes longer to fully appreciate. On first hearing I wondered what the fuss was about (ECUD is certainly more commercial and no surprise it sold more at the time) but it just grew and grew on me like Carole says).

You mention Cleo but on Am I The Same Girl (I think it's that track), I think she sounds like Michael Jackson

I do not own ECUD, but have heard all the songs... I did purchase DIM a few weeks ago and I DID have to "warm up" to the different sound... it's just different than her old stuff (the GREAT stuff). I have to agree with Marty about those songs she mentions - I find myself skipping them so to speak. I love the first 11 tracks... Well my 2 cents worth...

quoting noidea1960 "You mention Cleo but on Am I The Same Girl (I think it's that track), I think she sounds like Michael Jackson"

Doesn't the group "Swing Out Sister" sing 'Am I The Same Girl'? I heard that song in the 90's on cassette. Loved it and Swing Out Sister. I need to hear Dusty's version. I am so a newbie. I have only been into Dusty (discovered her) since Septemeber when I was convalescing on the sofa with my broken ankle from sliding in to 2nd in softball. I bought a laptop and looked at You Tube and learned new things about Dusty after taking the time to read her bio after the "Look of Love" song and vid. Then one thing led to another - I was hooked. Funny - I always heard of "Wishin & Hopin", IJDKWTDWMS, IOWTBWY, YDHTSYLM, etc, but did not know 'who' sang or what she looked like or where she was from.

Peace, Love & Dusty

Who sounds like Michael Jackson? Cleo or Dusty?
I agree some of the bonus tracks on 'DIM' aren't so great, but the whole original album is amazing! It didn't have to grow on me cos I loved it immediately... 'It Begin's Again', 'Living without Your Love', and 'Reputation', apart from a few songs, did take a while to grow on me though I have to admit.

I agree with you Sara I prefer Dusty In Memphis to ECUD.Every song on that album is superb.Dustys voice takes precedence over the backing musicians who themselves are playing beautifully.
